The University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) is the technical university of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate with over 20,000 students, more than 300 professorships and around 160 degree programs. As a place of top international research, it offers excellent working conditions and career opportunities. Those who study, research or work at RPTU experience a cosmopolitan environment and shape the future.

To supplement our interdisciplinary research profile at the Institute for Environmental Sciences (iES), we are looking for an individual with proven expertise in the field of environmental modeling. At the iES we successfully combine innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary research with disciplinary depth. We are therefore looking forward to applications that complement the existing iES portfolio in an integrative manner.

Your tasks include:

  1. Possible research foci of our new colleague may be in the theory and analysis of the structure and dynamics of environmental systems from an ecological or biogeochemical perspective (e.g. dynamic modeling of populations, communities, networks and matter dynamics, cross-scale modeling).
  2. We expect an integration into the existing research profile targeting the analysis of anthropogenic stressors in meta-ecosystems at the iES and corresponding existing research programs (e.g. DFG Research Training Group SystemLink; ).
  3. Due to the research focus of the iES, we welcome additional experience with empirical research (field data collection, experimental design).
  4. The RPTU offers opportunities to develop the research of the position holder in related fields such as applied mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence or social sciences. We ask the applicant to present some ideas in this context.
  5. The iES contributes to the Bachelor’s degree program in Environmental Sciences and the three English-language Master’s degree programs in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Pollution Management – Ecotoxicology, and Environmental Challenges and Human Responses.
  6. In teaching, the professorship represents environmental modeling (e.g. modeling in ecotoxicology) as well as related fields (e.g. statistics and/or GIS). It contributes to the quality assurance and further development of degree programs.
  7. The teaching commitment is 9 hours per week in each semester.
  8. Willingness to work in the university self-administration is required.

Your profile:

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and RPTU advocate a supervision concept in which a high degree of presence of the teaching staff at the university location is expected. In addition to the general requirements under employment law, the recruitment requirements set out in Section 49 of the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act apply.

  1. The prerequisites are a successfully completed degree at a university or comparable higher education institution (with the exception of a Bachelor’s degree), pedagogical aptitude, proven teaching experience, a qualified doctorate with clear links to environmental modeling and additional academic achievements (Section 49 (2) HochSchG).
  2. The special aptitude for scientific work and an international reputation must be demonstrated by publications in renowned international, peer-reviewed journals and successful acquisition of third-party funding (Section 49 (2) HochSchG).
  3. Interdisciplinary and international cooperation in the environmental sciences is desirable.
  4. Good pedagogical aptitude is expected.
  5. Depending on the degree program, teaching must be provided in either German or English. In principle, knowledge of both languages is required. If the applicant does not have sufficient knowledge of German, the willingness to acquire missing language skills within a reasonable period of time is expected.

RPTU stands for the diversity of all employees. We welcome applications from all interested parties, regardless of their ethnic and social origin, age, religion, gender, disability and sexual orientation or identity. Severely disabled persons and persons with equivalent status will be given preference if they are suitably qualified and suitable (please enclose proof of severe disability/equal status with your application). RPTU strives to increase the proportion of women in areas in which women are underrepresented. Applications from female and male scientists from abroad are expressly encouraged.

Your application:

We look forward to receiving meaningful applications (CV, certificates, teaching and research concept, etc.) by September 27, 2024 at the latest. The dates for personal interviews in Landau are set for November 7 and 8, 2024. Please submit your application via the «Online Application» button below or via our application portal ().

If you have any questions, please contact the Dean of the Department of Natural and Environmental Sciences Prof. Dr. Oliver Frör ().
