European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4km-long X‑ray laser, which produces X‑rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our Detector group we are looking for a Detector Calibration and Characterisation Scientist.

The Position

  • Be responsible for the development and improvement of the detector calibration and characterization algorithms and tools, focusing on their standardization and optimization.
  • Act as the point of contact to the Data Analysis group and instrument detector scientists regarding the integration of calibration and characterization tools in the calibration services and infrastructure.
  • Work with detector and instrument scientists to define requirements, develop, and validate the calibration and characterization tools to be integrated into the calibration services for the new detectors.
  • Review and improve user interfaces for the calibration services.
  • Prepare new deployments and testing of the new calibration devices.

Requirements

  • MSc/PhD in Physics or MSc/PhD in Engineering for software development.
  • Strong programming experience within a scientific context.
  • Experience in large scale data processing.
  • Experience in GPU programming (CUDA) is considered an asset.
  • Experience with HDF5 is considered as an asset.
  • Good knowledge of C++ is considered as an asset.
  • Experience with git and GitLab is considered an asset.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a structured way in a multilingual, multidisciplinary team with English as working language.
