At the Faculty of Applied Computer Science at the University of Augsburg, the position for a

Research Assistant (m/f/d)

at the Professorship for Computational Linguistics at the Institute of Computer Science is to be filled as soon as possible in the scope of regular working hours (100%) in a three-year fixed-term employment relationship. If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, remuneration will be based on salary group TV-L 13. The position can be carried out as part-time work.

Computational linguistics (natural language processing) is an interdisciplinary field that combines linguistics and computer science in order to use computers to investigate aspects of human language and to develop language technology. Our focus is on the development and application of computer-based models and algorithms for the analysis and understanding of natural language (computational semantics) with applications to digital humanities. To this end, we are researching machine learning methods (especially deep learning).

The position to be filled can involve either a doctorate or a postdoc phase.

Your responsibilities:

• Development and implementation of computer-aided models and algorithms for text processing (optionally also text and image processing)
• Design and implementation of empirical studies in the field of computational linguistics including the creation of benchmark corpora.
• Creation of high-quality scientific and/or technical work that is suitable for publication in renowned journals and for presentation at national and international conferences
• You keep yourself up to date with newly published methods in the fields of computational linguistics and machine learning (and optionally in the field of corpus linguistics)
• Coaching and mentoring of technical staff, students and young researchers as well as participation in team building
• Participation in the planning and implementation of courses and support of the tasks of the academic self-administration of the chair, in accordance with BayHIG

Your profile:

• Master\’s degree in a relevant field such as computational linguistics, computer science, cognitive science, digital humanities, or linguistics
• Interest in the processing of language and text, machine learning and programming
• Interest in innovation and creativity as well as the ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific research
• Very good written and oral communication skills in English and scientific writing
• Open-mindedness and the ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary research team and with external researchers, also internationally
• Flexibility and the ability to work independently and responsibly
• Solid programming skills in Python, knowledge of deep learning and data science frameworks are desirable
• Confident use of the Internet, e-mail and current office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

The required qualification must already be proven in the application documents by means of appropriate certificates.
