The German Institute for Economic Research, or, more commonly DIW Berlin, is an economic research institute in Germany, involved in basic research and policy advice.

The DIW Graduate Center offers a top-class economic doctoral research program in Berlin , an exciting city for graduate studies.

Every year, many young and promising economic researchers from around the world are attracted by their well-designed program, internationally renowned faculty, and partnerships with some of the best research institutions and universities in Germany.

The DIW GC cooperates with the Berlin universities, offering its students a very broad research community.

What are the costs of attending the DIW Graduate Center?

There are no tuition fees as PhD students will receive funding for the expected length of the program (5 years).

For the course phase, a stipend of €1,450 per month is provided. Funding during the research phase is normally provided through employment at one of the DIW’s research departments. Funding for the research phase is conditional on having fulfilled the Performance Criteria.

The DIW Graduate Center also recommends simultaneously enrolling at one of Berlin’s universities. This allows access to public transportation at no additional cost and ensures student health insurance.

Note that the universities charge a semester fee of approximately €280 – €315 per semester.
