Europa-Universität Flensburg seeks to fill the following position in Faculty III by March 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter:

Research Associate (d/m/w) in the Department of Philosophy

The position aims to promote early-career researchers with the objective of obtaining a doctorate. Initially limited to three years, the position may be extended with up to three additional years.

The Research Associate will be part of the research unit Political Philosophy, headed by Prof. Thomas Szanto. The research foci of the unit include Political Philosophy (esp. nationalism, populism, grievance politics, migration, social imaginaries, social cohesion, solidarity, belonging, and philosophy of Europe), Philosophy of Emotions (esp. normativity of emotions, affective injustice, and political emotions), Social Philosophy and (Non-ideal) Social Ontology, Critical and Political Phenomenology, Critical, Feminist or Political Epistemology, and Philosophy of Climate Change.

Duties:

  • Development and timely implementation of an own research project (i.e., dissertation), in English or German
  • Development, preparation, and teaching of courses in philosophy (1 course per semester), in English or German

Your profile:

  • A very good university degree (MA or equivalent) in philosophy. Candidates who have already submitted their Master’s thesis and provide a pre-approval at the time of application will also be considered.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Proficiency and/or strong research interest in one or more of the research foci of the Political Philosophy unit at EUF
  • Very high-level skills in written and spoken academic English
  • Good skills in (esp. spoken) German are an advantage but not required
  • Interest in interdisciplinary work
  • Ability to work in a team and strong commitment to teaching
  • Ability to work independently

In addition to the usual application documents (cover letter, academic CV, degree certificates indicating the final grade), please include a research proposal outlining your PhD-project (max. 5 pages), as well as a published article or a chapter of your MA-thesis. Academic reference letters are not required but can be uploaded as supporting material.

In addition, the Graduate Centre (GraZ) supports junior researchers in their qualification process and offers various academic and didactic qualification programs.
