EMBL Heidelberg
We are Europe’s research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1900 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
We are looking for an officer to join our Transportation Service team based at EMBL campus in Heidelberg, Germany. The Transportation Service is responsible for the official goods transportations and trips of our international research facility. The team also administrates the customs documentation for foreign and domestic shipments.
Your Role
The main duties of the position include both transportational/technical and administrative tasks:
- Driving the internal shuttle bus in the morning and/or evening between the EMBL campus, hotel and the EMBL guest houses
- Transporting seminar participants to and during events and conferences
- Airport transfers of visitors and staff
- Special transportations of scientific samples or animals
- Driving support for scientific expeditions
- Administrate the vehicle fleet and manage minor repairs to company vehicles
- Ensuring that the vehicles in the fleet are operational at all times
- Administrate customs declarations, collection of goods and animals
- Carrying out various purchases and deliveries
- Back-up at the EMBL reception in case of unforeseen absence of the receptionists
- Cooperation with other departments
The officer reports directly to the Head of Transportation Services. Depending on requirements, overtime may be required in the evenings or on weekends, sometimes at short notice.

You Have
- At least a Class B, BE and especially D work experience driver’s license to drive large buses and carry 19 passengers or more.
- Successful training and relevant work experience, ideally in an international environment.
- An excellent service-mindedness together with a high degree of flexibility and good teamwork is essential.
- Enjoyment of working with a variety of people of different nationalities and the ability to adjust accordingly are prerequisites, as are good organizational and communication skills. Good German language skills and the willingness to communicate with staff and guests also in English complete the profile.
- The successful candidate will be able to adapt very quickly to changing situations, be completely trustworthy, reliable and able to work under pressure, remain calm and collected and be willing to work flexible hours.
- Experience from working with computers and having basic knowledge of Word and Excel is required.
- Requirements after the German Professional Driver Qualification Act (Berufskraftfahrerqualifikationsgesetz, BKrFQG) as well as Fahrerqualifizierungsnachweis “FQN” are required.
