PSI is a research centre for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland and contributes to the education of future generations by training young researchers.
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science, and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates, or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.
For the SNF Project “VISION-EAR: VISualize Sound transmissION with dynamic phase-contrast micro-tomography of the human middle EAR” localized at the “X-Ray Tomographic Microscopy” group at the Swiss Light Source (SLS), we are looking for a:
Postdoctoral Fellow
Your tasks
The focus of this SNSF project is to image and visualize the transmission of sound from the tympanic membrane to the oval window in the human middle ear. The objectives of this post-doctoral position are:
- Improve the sound stimulation setup in collaboration with the clinical team and support synchrotron experiments.
- Develop a 3D semantic segmentation algorithm to label automatically the middle ear microstructures.
- Optimize the dynamic analysis pipeline by integrating digital volume correlation to quantitatively detect micromovements in the ossicular chain.
- Tailor the pipeline for large X-ray phase contrast tomography datasets.
- Segment and perform the 3D analysis of the acquired datasets.
- Investigate non-linear behavior of the human middle ear bones.
Your profile
- A PhD degree in computing science, biomedical engineering, physics, or a related field.
- Previous experience in programming, data analysis, machine learning, and image processing.
- Knowledge in X-ray tomography is considered a plus.
- Very good communication skills (speaking and writing) in English.
- Enjoy working in an interdisciplinary, multinational research environment.
- Be an enthusiastic researcher and a good team player to ensure your integration.
We offer
Our institution is based on interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will benefit from systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
This position (with an initial 2-year contract) is a 3-year position localized at PSI and performed in collaboration with the Sense Research Center, the CHUV in Lausanne, and the Eaton Peabody Laboratory in Boston (USA). Salary and conditions of employment are according to the rules of SNF for Postdoctoral Fellows.
