The job:
We are looking for a PhD candidate for the interdisciplinary PhD Cohort SEESAW (Societal and environmental impacts of complex extremes in a changing world) . The cohort aims to understand the impacts of hydroclimatic extremes with a focus on droughts and transitions from drought to floods by combining unique large-scale datasets of hydrometeorological observations, remote sensing , climate simulations and newspaper-based impacts.

We seek an outgoing, engaging personality , passionate about climate change impacts on forests. Errors are tolerated , they are part of work being done.

Your tasks:
The post responsibilities involve:

  • Generating a new long-term remote sensing product on forest condition ,
  • Analysing the effect of groundwater levels on forest condition anomalies, and
  • Quantifying climate change effects on forest condition anomalies.

The successful candidate has the opportunity to participate in summer schools and workshops. The candidate is also expected to interact with other PhD candidates of the SEESAW cohort to select extreme events and link hazard and impact perspectives together to improve our preparedness for complex hydroclimatic extremes in a changing climate.

Your profile:

  • A master degree in Earth Sciences, Physics, Data Sciences or Mathematics or similar
  • Strong computational & data analytical skills
  • Experience with remote sensing
  • Proficient English skills
  • Knowledge of plant physiology is a strong advantage
  • Curiosity, self-motivation, and enthusiasm for innovative research
  • Motivation to work in a closely integrated international and interdisciplinary team
