Research Assistant Position (f/m/d) (Ref. 23/06)
The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.
WIAS invites applications for a Research Assistant Position (f/m/d) (Ref. 23/06) in the Research Group “Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing“ (Head: Prof. Dr. Volker John) devoted to the topic “Quantitative Biomedicine“, starting as soon as possible.
The successful candidate will work on the development of mathematical and numerical methods for problems motivated by the usage of medical imaging for non-invasive clinical diagnostic. Mathematical research fields of particular interests are forward and inverse modeling in computational biomechanics (biological flows and tissues), data assimilation methods, and (data-driven) reduced-order modeling. Both analytical research questions and technical implementation aspects of the resulting algorithms are of central importance. Relevant application fields include the characterization of tissue diseases and cancer biomarkers from MRI and MR Elastography images, or the modeling and assimilation of ultrasound images.
The work tasks include:
- The postdoc is expected to actively contribute to the application area “Quantitative Biomedicine” collaborating with other research groups in the institute. The research groups have ongoing collaborations with the Charité University Hospital and with further partners in the field of medical imaging.
- This position is associated with the publications of scientific results in international peer-reviewed journals, the presentation of the research at international conferences, and the support in the supervision of bachelor and master students working at WIAS.
We are looking for: We seek a highly motivated researcher with a very good degree and an excellent PhD in applied mathematics, computational sciences, or related fields, with the willingness to engage on innovative research questions and take on responsibility for interdisciplinary work. Previous experience as independent researcher is desired but not required. We expect the candidate to have a strong background in numerical analysis, mathematical modeling, and scientific computing, as well as experience with scientific object-oriented programming languages (C++, Python, or Julia).
Skills and experience with at least one of the following areas is required:
- Numerical methods for the solution of partial differential equations
- Reduced-order modeling in solid and fluid mechanics
- Mathematical methods for analysis and processing of medical images
