Research Associate (Postdoc) in terrestrial Remote Sensing with focus on Data Science and Method Development § 28 Subsection 2 HmbHG

Institution: Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Earth System Sciences, Institute of Geography

Start date: 01.07.2025, fixed for a period of three years. The contract provides for a maximum extension of up to three years depending on the associate’s achievements during the first stage.

Scope of work: full-time position suitable for part-time

Your responsibilities

Duties include teaching and research in the respective department or institute. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications as well as acquire teaching experience. These duties are intended to promote academic achievement. Therefore, at least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the associate’s own academic work.

This position focuses on research in the field of terrestrial remote sensing applications, with an emphasis on utilizing multi-source and multi-scale Earth Observation (EO) data to develop innovative EO products and methodologies, including the application of machine learning and deep learning techniques in terrestrial studies. A willingness to contribute to the integration of remote sensing variables into climate and land models is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive expertise in terrestrial remote sensing, with proven experience in planning and executing UAV campaigns and a strong background in remote sensing method development, as demonstrated by a solid publication record.

Teaching responsibilities include contributing to the development of the Remote Sensing and GIS curriculum, teaching these and related subjects within the department’s MSc and BSc programs, and supervising students. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to lead the Remote Sensing Instrumentation Lab and actively seek third-party funding for research projects.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field, plus doctorate. The candidate should have practical experience in UAV data collection and analysis and be capable of conducting fieldwork. Excellent written and spoken English is essential. German language proficiency is an asset.

This position requires outstanding interpersonal skills, a high degree of motivation, and excellent organizational abilities. The successful candidate will thrive in both independent work and collaborative environments within an interdisciplinary team.
