Data Scientist (177-24)

In 2025, the Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung (IPF) will launch three new platforms in the fields of polymer and material analysis (PMA), applied surface engineering (ASE), and cross-scale polymer processing (CPP) which will comprise the entire institute. The PMA platform combines the advantages of decentralized equipment and a virtually centralized hub of expertise. The ASE and CPP platforms will be implemented to communicate and utilize the competencies and activities in the field of surface engineering and polymer processing both internally and externally.

One of the standout features of the platforms is the establishment of knowledge-based data structures and an advanced e-booking system with an instrument database that will facilitate the seamless registration, tracking, service, and exploitation of analytical equipment, ensuring that the platforms are neatly organized and remain at the forefront of technological advancements. Booking and use of available equipment will be easily accessible to a wide range of internal and external users.

You will help to develop and extend the platforms to contribute to the establishment and ongoing improvement of the digital system, as well as the implementation of a new database, which will serve as an interface to Big Data Science. This includes ensuring that the platforms operate efficiently, fulfilling their mission to enhance analytical, surface engineering, and polymer processing capabilities and expertise and facilitate groundbreaking research within the IPF.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain the research platforms (front- and backend)
  • Develop and improve the booking system, device, and knowledge-based databases
  • Development and improvement of sample database and user interface
  • Design and implementation of the user workflows
  • Developing and implementing strategies for data structuring, management, and quality control

Requirements:

  • At least two years of experience in PHP development and Relational Database/SQL
  • Masters (or higher) in computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics, or comparable
  • Willingness to actively help shape our platforms and put ideas into practice together
  • Knowledge in big-data projects and big data-infrastructure
  • Fluent in English and German (CEFR B2/C1)

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, strong teamwork skills, strong organizational skills
  • Skills in negotiation and mediation

We expect that the researcher will actively contribute to collaborations in large data competence networks and participate in internal committees, initiate collaborations within IPF and external partners, and support IPF on the way to transformation of its unique expertise towards AI and big data.

We offer you a varied and interesting challenge in an international working environment and appropriate remuneration. The remuneration and social benefits (including a company pension scheme, job ticket, flexible family-friendly working hours, and job-related further training) are based on the qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (EG 13 TV-L).

The IPF Dresden strives for gender equality and diversity in all fields. Applications by people with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are equally qualified. Moreover, as the IPF would like to raise the proportion of women in fields where they are underrepresented, women in particular are invited to apply.
