Scientist – Functional Genomics and Clinical Discovery
“Research for a life without cancer“ is our mission at the German Cancer Research Center. We investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors and look for new cancer prevention strategies. We develop new methods with which tumors can be diagnosed more precisely and cancer patients can be treated more successfully. Every contribution counts – whether in research, administration or infrastructure. This is what makes our daily work so meaningful and exciting.
The Precision Sarcoma Research Group is seeking for the next possible date a postdoctoral candidate to join our team investigating sarcomas with high genomic complexity.
Bone and soft-tissue sarcomas are a diverse group of rare and aggressive malignancies arising from mesenchymal tissues. These cancers are characterized by low incidence rates, delayed diagnoses, limited treatment options, and poor clinical outcomes, highlighting an urgent need for innovative therapies and collaborative research efforts to address their unique challenges. The Precision Sarcoma Research Group is dedicated to identifying and advancing biomarkers and precision therapeutic targets for clinical evaluation in sarcoma patients. We leverage in-house and public multi-omics datasets as well as advanced methodologies (e.g. long-read sequencing, single-nuclei sequencing, and spatial multi-omics) to capture genomic, transcriptomic, and immune microenvironment alterations in sarcoma pathogenesis. Our functional genomics toolkit (including CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, pooled library screens, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq) enables validation of candidate alterations and their potential as therapeutic targets.
Your Tasks
Experimental Design, Execution, and Data Analysis:
- Develop, optimize, and apply functional genomics assays such as CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, pooled library screens, as well as advanced multi-omics methods (single-nuclei, and spatial transcriptomics)
- Perform high-throughput screening to investigate gene function and regulation
- Analyze large-scale genomic datasets using bioinformatics tools, integrating multi-omics data to extract biological insights
- Collaborate with computational biologists for advanced data interpretation
Research Development:
- Stay updated on the latest advancements in genomics and molecular biology
- Identify and propose innovative approaches to address research challenges
- Write manuscripts, reports, and contribute to grant applications
Collaborative Engagement and Leadership:
- Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including biologists, bioinformaticians, and clinicians
- Present findings at lab meetings, institutional seminars, and scientific conferences
- Mentor and guide graduate and undergraduate students in experimental techniques and data analysis
Your Profile
- PhD or equivalent degree in cancer biology, immunology, biotechnology, molecular biology, or related fields
- Extensive expertise in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and protein detection methods
- Proven experience in designing, executing, and analyzing data from CRISPR/Cas9 screens, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, Hi-C, or similar epigenetic profiling methods
- Proficiency in R programming for statistical analysis and data visualization is highly desirable
- Strong publication record, including lead authorships, with experience in collaborative research and supervision of students or interns
- Comprehensive knowledge of cancer biology, immunology, and cancer genomics, maintained through rigorous literature review and applied to data interpretation and project advancement
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with high self-initiative, a strong work ethic, and team-oriented mindset
- Good knowledge of English is required for the job
Applications must include a CV, cover letter, complete list of publications, references or recommendation letters, and expected availability date. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
