Offer Description

Area of research: Promotion

Part-Time Suitability: The position is suitable for part-time employment.

In the Inelastic Photon Scattering group of the Institute of Quantum Materials and Technologies (IQMT), we are looking for 2 PhD students who will research the properties of pressure tuning of quantum materials. The selected candidates will investigate the interplay between charge ordering and other competing electronic phases in selected families of quantum materials by probing their response to elastic tuning (chemical, hydrostatic, and uniaxial pressure). The projects are proposed within the framework of the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 288 „Elastic Tuning and Response of Electronic Quantum Phases of Matter“.

Responsibilities:

  • Research work for the single-crystal growth of quantum materials and for their characterization using thermodynamic, transport, and X-ray diffraction techniques.
  • Performing photon scattering experiments on these crystals at variable temperature and pressure conditions, including experiments at large-scale research facilities.
  • Presenting and publishing the research results at conferences, scientific workshops, and in scientific journals.

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest scientific organization.
