The Institute for AI Safety and Security provides research and development services in the field of AI-related methods, processes, algorithms and execution environments. The focus is on ensuring safety and security for AI-based solutions in ambitious application classes. “Safety and security by design” is a central aspect in this context, since it directly supports future requirements of safety-critical applications that are based on AI or integrate AI-based components.
Main Research Areas of the Institute for AI Safety and Security are:
  • Development processes and methods for safety-critical AI applications
  • Robust and reliable approaches to safeguard AI methods and algorithms
  • Safety and security in the context of AI-based applications
  • Management and use of sensitive data
  • Execution environments for AI-based applications
  • Innovative computation methods
The Department for Safety-Critical Data Infrastructures deals with data and information quality as well as the foundations for the development of secure, decentralized data infrastructures. One main area of the department is the development of methods and technologies with a focus on data sovereignty and semantic interoperability for critical and sensitive application scenarios. Key aspects include the topics of cryptography, data security, secure data infrastructures, and the technical-scientific expansion of decentralized data and service ecosystems like GAIA-X. To ensure a high level of expertise, the aforementioned platforms are also to be implemented on a small scale (primarily for development purposes and prototyping) at the DLR Institute for AI Safety and Security.
As part of the DLR’s activities related to data spaces, fundamental technical tasks are to be undertaken. This involves a coordinated approach to software, hardware, and technical infrastructure-related activities. The focus is on data spaces offered and operated by the institute, as well as demonstrators of scientific/technical results (and their interaction and interconnection with each other). The focus of this position is on the setup, further development, and operation of the institute’s/department’s own IT systems for demonstrators and data spaces, both for routine tasks and project-related topics.
The advertised position includes the following technical areas:
  • Support in the development and implementation of cryptographic algorithms, particularly in the field of homomorphic encryption
  • Participation in the analysis and optimization of existing cryptographic systems
  • Research of current cryptographic developments and trends to support the team
  • Preparation and creation of technical documentation and reports
  • Support in organizing and conducting internal workshops and training sessions on cryptographic topics
  • Presentation of new cryptographic topics in internal meetings

Bachelor’s or Master’s student of computer science, mathematics, engineering or a related field Basic knowledge of modern cryptography, preferably with initial exposure to homomorphic encryption Good programming skills in languages such as Python and JavaScript Interest in cryptographic issues and working in security-critical areas Ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new topics and understand complex issues Initial experience in presenting technical content is an advantage Teamwork skills, independent working style, and commitment Fluent in German and English, both spoken and written
