Our Service Unit Global Intellectual Property is one of the biggest inhouse IP units in Germany. We are responsible for all services relating to patents, trademarks, trade secrets, plant variety protection, copyrights, designs and IP Intelligence, as well as all IP-contracts. We are a global team servicing the entire BASF group and work in close alliance with the operating business units as well as with the research and technology platforms. In this way we create a basis for future business success and actively influence BASF’s competitive situation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We are looking for a patent attorney to manage a global patent portfolio for plastic additives in our Performance Chemicals division. Furthermore, you will actively shape the IP contract activities of the business unit you are responsible for.

  1. You will align your advice with the business strategy of the division you are responsible for and acquire in-depth knowledge of the technologies, strategies and goals of the division you are responsible for.
  2. You will analyze BASF research and development results for protectability and the value of achievable protection and will be responsible for securing them through industrial property rights.
  3. Furthermore, you will examine third-party intellectual property rights for their scope of protection and their impact on potential BASF products and processes and advise the business unit on all available options.
  4. You will also be responsible for proactively advising our internal clients on the possibilities of using industrial property rights to protect strategic business interests.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Completed studies in a scientific or scientific-technical degree program and completed training as a European Patent Attorney and/or patent assessor/patent attorney.
  2. Several years of practical professional experience gained in a patent department of an industrial company, in a patent law firm or at a patent office.
  3. Scientific and/or patent law experience in the field of chemistry or biochemistry; ideally also in the drafting and negotiation of IP contracts as well as knowledge of licensing and contract law.
  4. Interest in digital technologies and their applications as well as convincing and business fluent communication in English; good knowledge of German is an advantage.
  5. Experience in drafting and negotiating IP-related contracts (license agreements, CDA/MTA, R&D cooperation agreements) is an advantage.
