The Institute of Machine Learning in Biomedical Imaging (IML) focuses on pioneering research to harness the power of machine learning in tackling pressing challenges in biomedical imaging. With a mission to revolutionise diagnostic and prognostic capabilities, IML develops novel and accessible solutions that empower clinicians to make faster, more accurate, and reliable decisions. Under the leadership of Julia Schnabel, the institute’s research emphasises applications in cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and maternal/perinatal health.
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoc (f/m/x) to advance research in the field of Virtual Reality (VR) , aiming to develop innovative tools for improved visualisation, interaction, and decision-making in biomedical imaging and clinical applications. The position is available from 1st March 2025.

Your tasks
As our new Postdoc (f/m/x) in Virtual Reality (VR), you will play a pivotal role in transforming biomedical imaging and clinical decision-making.
Your focus will be on one or more of these exciting areas:
- Drive innovation in VR visualisation: Develop immersive tools that enable you and your collaborators to explore complex biomedical imaging data in entirely new ways, uncovering insights that traditional methods might miss.
- Shape the future of personalised medicine: Use VR to create patient-specific simulations, helping clinicians visualise diagnostic and prognostic scenarios and make better treatment decisions.
- Empower clinicians with VR solutions: Design VR applications that integrate imaging data and machine learning predictions, giving healthcare professionals intuitive tools to enhance their workflows.
- Put users first: Create VR experiences that are not only cutting-edge but also user-friendly and accessible to researchers and clinicians alike.

- Guide and mentor students and doctoral candidates, sharing your expertise to help them succeed.

Your profile
- You hold a PhD in computer science, biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, medical physics, or a related field.
- You have a proven track record of publications in top-tier journals (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Medical Image Analysis, Nature Machine Intelligence).
- You bring profound knowledge in Virtual Reality (VR) technologies and their applications, ideally in biomedical imaging or related fields.
- You have strong programming skills, particularly in Python and C/C++, and are proficient with relevant libraries (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine, OpenVR, or other VR-related frameworks) and are experienced in software development practices, including version control (e.g., Git) as well as collaborative coding.
- You bring a thoughtful, well-organized, and collaborative approach to your work, combining analytical skills with creative problem-solving to proactively address challenges.
- You thrive in interdisciplinary environments, enjoying collaboration with clinicians, scientists, and engineers.
- You possess excellent communication and presentation skills, with fluency in spoken and written English.
Desirable qualifications
- Familiarity with machine learning methods and their integration into VR environments.
- Experience in teaching or supervising students, and a willingness to share knowledge.
- Initial experience in securing third-party funding.
