The MPI-CBG invites applications to establish up to two Research Groups for Max Planck Research Group Leaders (W2) in Mathematics for Living Systems. We are looking for internationally recognized scholars from the mathematical sciences with a research profile in applied algebra, geometry, topology, and/or tensors, with experience working in biology, statistics, machine learning, stochastic modelling, dynamical systems, and/or optimization. We encourage pioneering projects that transcend disciplinary boundaries.

The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) and the adjacent Center for Systems Biology Dresden (CSBD) pursue a mission to advance multiscale biological discovery through innovative and cutting-edge mathematics, physics, and computation. With the recent appointment of Prof Heather Harrington as the new director at MPI-CBG and CSBD, the institute is heavily investing in expanding mathematics for living systems.

An advantage of this position is the ample opportunity for close collaborations with other research groups at the institute as well as CSBD partners, the Max Planck Institute for Physics of Complex Systems (MPI-PKS) and the Technische Universität Dresden. Currently about 500 employees work at the institute, representing over 50 nations and a wide range of scientific expertise. Candidates should hold a PhD in mathematics or related fields, ideally awarded within the past seven years, and have postdoctoral research experience. An anticipated start date would be Autumn 2024.

  • The initial group leader appointment is for five years, with the possibility of extension upon successful evaluation.
  • The competitive salary and benefits are based on the W2 remuneration group of the federal civil service remuneration act.
  • Junior group leaders receive a competitive core support package with funds for postdocs, PhD students, and technical staff which can be expanded by attracting external third party funding.
  • Funding for equipment, workshops, and travel is provided.
  • Successful candidates will develop an independent research program in an interactive and cross-disciplinary environment, benefiting from access to our technology platforms and facilities, including high-performance computing infrastructure.
  • Group leaders play an active contributing role in scientific and operational administration, engaging with our predoc and postdoc programs and representing the institute at various external meetings and scientific bodies.
