For nearly 150 years, Chicago Public Library (CPL) has been at the heart of our city. A place of wonder, exploration and community, CPL welcomes more than 9 million people every year. Our national and international leadership in the library field stems from our deep commitment to supporting and serving patrons as they learn, play, develop skills and strengthen their communities.

Duties:

  • Provide leadership, strategic vision, and a unified voice for the Chicago Public Library archives, special collections, digital collections and exhibits.
  • Focus on Chicago culture and history, including the largest African American history and literature collection in the Midwest.
  • Provide direction for system-wide initiatives that showcase special collections and exhibits across the community and beyond.
  • Ensure that the acquisition, description, exhibit and digitization of archival materials and special collections reflect and support the diversity of library service populations.
  • Supervise 4 curators, archivists, and librarians, with a division total of over 15 staff.
  • Create a strong team and shared vision with staff across multiple physical locations.
  • Lead strategic planning for digitization program for special collections and archival materials.
  • Identify grant opportunities and work with the Chicago Public Library Foundation to develop, submit and implement proposals.
  • Participate in local, regional, and national consortia and professional associations.
  • Participate in planning and preparation of division budget.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited American Library Association college or university with a Master's degree in Library Science or an approved foreign credential evaluation plus five years of professional library experience of which three years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • At least 5 years of experience in special collections and/or archives.
  • Demonstrated expertise in arrangement, processing and description of archival materials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience managing large archival processing projects.
  • Experience supervising professional staff and creating a supportive work environment.

Location: 400 S. State St. Technology, Content, and Innovation

DAYS OFF: Saturday & Sunday

SHIFT: Monday- Friday 9:00am-5:00pm

HOURS: 35 hours a week

This position is exempt from the career service.
