Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is seeking qualified candidates for the faculty administrator position of Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business. Under the direction of the Vice President for Academic and Workforce Programs, Academic Deans provide leadership and supervision for faculty and staff in the areas of teaching, curriculum revision and development, technology, and assessment, with a focus on academic excellence. The Dean will proactively pursue strategies that will provide students with clear pathways to their academic goals.
As the leader of an academic division, the Dean will promote accountability and innovation and will contribute to, and participate in the planning, execution, and measurement of student outcomes. The successful individual will foster a culture of success and effective change strategies and will contribute to master planning efforts.
Also responsible for managing the administrative affairs of the Academic Division, Academic Deans will work effectively with faculty and staff, and promote diversity and value a culture of respect. The Deans will provide a vision for the Division based on best practices and the use of data using inclusive approaches that value the skills and abilities of faculty and staff.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities of the Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business include :
Teaching, Learning and Technology
- Support pedagogy that promotes student engagement and learning
- Encourage the use of technology in the curriculum
- Plan and coordinate division meetings and events
- Support faculty in meeting the academic needs of students
- Respond to student questions and concerns, and encourage faculty to reach out to students
- Ensure Division website is accurate and up-to-date
Curriculum Development and Assessment
- Promote and support faculty in the design and development of new courses / programs, deletion of courses / programs, and course / program revision
- Ensure that all programs provide clear academic pathways
- Oversee all assessment activities and ensure that all programs implement their Program Assessment Plan
- Develop the master schedule in collaboration with VP for Academics and Workforce, Division Deans, and the office of Enrollment Management and Student Success
- Monitor enrollment of all courses within the Division
- Approve the addition / deletion of courses during registration periods
- Provide the Vice President with regular reports including : Annual Reports, Assessment Plans, Academic Discipline Plans, Professional Development Plans, Advisory Committees, and Specialized Accreditation Reports
Division Administration
- Supervise and evaluate all faculty (full-time, adjunct, dual enrollment) in the Division
- Supervise all staff in the Division
- Serve as an advocate for issues initiatives, goals, and needs of the Division
- Successfully Implement College policies and regulations within the Division
- Lead and participate in the recruitment and hiring of faculty and facilitate the search process
- Interview and recommend final candidates for full time faculty and staff positions
- Recommend the employment of adjunct faculty to the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs
- Supervise the advisory committee process for all career programs within the Division
- Develop budget requests, allocate and manage resources (budgetary, personnel and facilities) within the Division
- Coordinate all Division activities with other Deans
- Facilitate clear communication between the Division and the College community
- Work with the Office of Enrollment Management & Student Success to address student concerns related to the Division
- Serve on Committees as assigned
Minimum Qualifications :
- Master\’s Degree in an academic discipline or in Higher Education Administration
- Full-time or significant adjunct higher education teaching
- Experience in planning, coordination and ongoing improvement of curriculum and instruction
- Experience in outcomes assessment
- Understanding of and a commitment to the mission of a comprehensive community college
- Commitment to student success
- Participatory leadership style; demonstrated creativity and flexibility in problem solving
- Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence
- Sensitivity to the educational and personal goals of a diverse student population
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Strong interpersonal, administrative, and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications :
- Master\’s Degree in division (Humanities, Social Sciences or Business)
- Earned Doctorate
- Two to four years of progressive administrative / leadership experience in higher education
