Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate with deep expertise in banking to be a member of our highly successful Global Transactions practice in Germany and our valued global Knowledge function. The role involves working in a diverse, inclusive environment, contributing directly to the firm’s client and people strategies.

Global Transactions at Freshfields brings together lawyers specializing in corporate, finance, and real estate in a transactional practice group. Our finance lawyers focus on leveraged finance, corporate lending, acquisition financing, real estate finance, infrastructure, project finance, derivatives, structured finance, debt capital markets, asset finance, restructuring, and capital solutions.

Role summary/purpose of job

The Knowledge Lawyer\’s primary focus will be on banking transactions, including leveraged finance, corporate and acquisition finance, infrastructure finance, and real estate finance. The role involves working closely with leading partners and lawyers, covering general finance topics relevant to finance lawyers across the German practice, such as subordination, security, and guarantees.

The candidate should bring deep expertise in banking law and a willingness to develop further, with responsibilities including:

  • Enabling the firm to provide market-leading client service by tracking and sharing updates on key developments in loan markets, and analyzing impacts for clients.
  • Helping grow the firm’s business by developing client content and contributing to publications and client conversations.
  • Developing the legal skills of lawyers through internal training and legal queries support.

The role involves collaboration with Knowledge Lawyers across Germany, London, and Continental Europe, and integration into the wider Knowledge community at the firm, fostering a supportive and innovative culture.

Key responsibilities

Enabling client service

  • Monitor and disseminate legal developments, considering their impact on internal knowledge products and business development.
  • Create and update internal knowledge resources, working with lawyers to identify value-added products.
  • Develop views on legal developments and market practices with senior stakeholders.
  • Capture insights from client mandates, identify trends, and incorporate them into knowledge products and training.
  • Engage lawyers at all levels, encouraging contribution and collaboration.
  • Promote innovation in knowledge delivery, including AI and document automation tools.

Growing the firm’s business and client relationships

  • Align with the firm’s strategy, identify opportunities for client content, and help raise the practice’s profile through publications and seminars.

Developing legal skills within the firm

  • Act as an internal legal advisor, understanding relevant developments and providing legal support.
  • Design and deliver internal training programs, engaging lawyers at all levels.

Key requirements

Experience and qualifications

  • Qualified lawyer with a strong academic background.
  • Extensive experience in banking law, finance law, or related roles, ideally in a law firm or legal environment.
  • Fluency in German and English, both written and spoken.
