Senior Developer (f/m/d) for the Accelerator Control System

Reference No.: BE 2025/4

Do you want to develop software that controls a complex research facility and shapes the future? We invite you to become part of our team at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) to further develop the control systems of our accelerators and lay the foundation for top-level research. You will play a key role in the strategic development of our control systems for our current and future accelerators.

About Us

The HZB operates, among other facilities, two synchrotron radiation light sources, MLS and BESSY II, which offer scientists from around the world unique opportunities for their experiments. Accelerators are the heart of these light sources at our campus in Berlin-Adlershof. The control system combines the various components, such as vacuum, magnet, high-frequency, or measurement systems, into an integrated facility. As a control system group of around ten developers, we are responsible for a wide range of tasks: from integrating individual devices to control and automation, as well as long-term storage of process data and display on graphical interfaces for the operators of the facility. We work closely with the specialist groups responsible for the various hardware components. Additionally, we support the operation of the software we develop in close collaboration with the IT infrastructure groups at HZB.We work with free and open-source software and actively contribute our developments to the corresponding projects. Within the team, we practice open knowledge sharing and provide space for independent, creative solution approaches.

Your Tasks

  • Strategic : You drive the long-term and strategic development of the EPICS based control system for the accelerators at the HZB Adlershof site, via decisions on software and hardware. In collaboration with the team lead, you shape the future of our control systems.
  • Coordinating : As deputy team lead, you coordinate projects and work related to device integration, in close collaboration with the team lead.
  • Developing : You develop drivers, software, and tools independently or supervise their implementation by other developers in the team, with a focus on integrating new devices.
  • Networking : You participate in international open-source projects, such as the EPICS collaboration, to further develop the frameworks used by HZB. You present results at international conferences to strengthen your personal and HZB\’s network.
  • Practical : You occasionally participate in the operation of the accelerator and thus have a direct connection to the application of our product.

Your Profile

  • You have a Master\’s/Diploma degree in Computer Science, Technical Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a comparable field of study, with ideally several years of professional experience.
  • You are proficient in the application of relevant programming languages and techniques (e.g., C, C++, and Python, as well as network-based or serial device communication).
  • You have experience in implementing software projects, ideally as project lead or in an agile team.
  • You have experience with a SCADA framework, ideally in the context of large scientific facilities or preferably EPICS.
  • You are willing to occasionally travel for conference visits (approx. once a year).

Our Offer

  • Opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers
  • Further development opportunities and training programmes
  • Attractive remuneration through payment according to Public Service Wage Agreement (TVöD Bund)
  • 30 days holiday/year
  • Extensive additional benefits, such as company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programmes
  • Good work-life balance through counselling services on family and career and flexible working time models: Flexitime, part-time, hybrid working
  • And a team that is looking forward to meeting you!
