Research Assistant/Associate (f/m/d) – PhD Position in Fluid Mechanics and Air Quality Monitoring
Chair and Institute of Highway Engineering
Our Profile
The Institute of Highway Engineering (ISAC) at RWTH Aachen University stands for a sustainable and digital transport infrastructure. As a research institution, we focus on the development and use of modern technologies and processes in road infrastructure.
We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join our research team in the SchwarmMessRad project. This innovative project focuses on predicting air pollutants and urban heat islands using crowdsourced data from sensor-equipped bicycles and artificial intelligence (AI). The results of this project will contribute to a better understanding of environmental pollution and heat islands in urban areas and enable the development of practical solutions for climate adaptation.
Minimum Requirements
- Completed university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with sensor technologies, data collection systems, and laboratory test setups.
- Programming skills (e.g., Python, C++) for microcontrollers, measuring sensors, and control units.
- Familiarity with environmental data analysis and strong analytical/problem-solving skills.
- Strong interest in environmental protection and emission control.
- Excellent communication skills in German (CEFR Level C1, C2, or native speaker); flexible and effective use of the English language for communication in private, public, academic, and professional contexts.
Your Duties and Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of a mobile measurement system to monitor air quality in diverse environments, selecting and evaluating suitable sensors for real-world use.
- Build a laboratory test stand at RWTH Aachen University to validate sensor performance, focusing on driving speed and angle of incidence.
- Verify system accuracy and collect data in real-world conditions, studying the effects of driving speed and environmental factors on air quality.
- Contribute to the development of climate adaptation measures and collaborate with project partners on developing a user-friendly online platform to display the project results.
- Preparation, documentation, and communication of research results in project meetings, project reports, scientific publications, and national and international conferences.
