About the team The Information Support & Resources (ISR) team is the backbone of EMBO’s digital infrastructure.

The core team of three staff is supported by a flexible pool of freelancers and maintains the IT systems, databases and grant administration software that serve about 60 staff members.

Your Role As Head of Information Support & Resources you will lead the development and maintenance of EMBO’s IT ecosystem.

The role combines technical leadership, hands‑on contribution and strategic advisory work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the ISR team and freelancers, providing practical support and strategic technical guidance.
  • Advise programmes and activities on their IT needs and identify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and modern tooling.
  • Plan and develop new in‑house workflow and data‑management features.
  • Lead software and hardware procurement, including business systems such as CRM and finance tools, and evaluate AI and automation platforms relevant to EMBO.
  • Deliver training and onboarding for staff on new tools and workflows.
  • Supervise the administration and strategic development of the EMBO web application and resource portfolio (Word Press, Django/Python, Laravel/PHP; Postgre SQL, My SQL, File Maker; Vue. js; Nginx on Linux bare metal or Docker).
  • Oversee the administration of Linux and Windows/File Maker servers and cloud‑based services (Microsoft 365).
  • Liaise with the IT Services team of EMBL, particularly on cybersecurity.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant IT standards, GDPR and audit requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required by the EMBO Director.
  • Occasional travel and work outside normal hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Technical expertise
  • Extensive knowledge of IT systems, networks and infrastructure; hands‑on experience in application and database development and operation.
  • Database platforms
  • Experience with File Maker or similar database platforms.
  • Automation & AI
  • Familiarity with AI tools and automation platforms relevant to an organisational context.
  • Security & Data Protection
  • Strong understanding of data protection, cybersecurity principles and best practices.
  • Operating systems
  • Experience managing a predominantly mac OS environment with specialised Windows software.
  • Leadership & strategic skills
  • Demonstrated team and project leadership experience; ability to provide practical support and strategic guidance.

  • Proactive pursuit of new tools, automation and AI to reduce repetitive work and improve efficiency.

  • English
  • Excellent spoken and written English; commitment to integrity and confidentiality.
  • Desired (optional)
  • Master’s degree in computer science, IT or a related field.
  • Experience in multi‑stakeholder organisations.
  • Experience with the specific technologies, frameworks and platforms currently used at EMBO.
  • Experience with database migration, GDPR training.
  • Knowledge of scientific computing environments and publishing tools.
  • Experience in the scientific or non‑profit sector.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
