Our newly established Laboratory for Advanced Metallurgy and Manufacturing of Metals (AM3) develops new metallic materials for high-performance applications and advanced manufacturing processes and operates across Empa's Dübendorf and Thun site. A key focus of our activities is metal additive manufacturing. Our research covers the entire process chain, from alloy design and powder development to manufacturing, process monitoring, microstructure engineering, and material properties. For our Thun site, we are seeking an outstanding and highly motivated early career researcher for a Tenure-Track Group Leader Position in Metal Additive Manufacturing. The successful candidate will establish an innovative research agenda and lead an internationally recognized research group.

Tenure Track Group Leader Position Metal Additive Manufacturing

Your responsibilities

Establish a strong research profile in metal additive manufacturing within the laboratory's broader activities (including materials development, powder engineering, process development and monitoring, process modelling and simulation, and materials characterization)

Acquire and manage competitive research funding from national and international funding agencies and industrial partners

Develop and maintain strong collaborations with academic and industrial partners in Switzerland and internationally

Lead research projects and supervise PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and MSc students

Publish high-quality research in leading international journals and present results at major scientific conferences

Contribute actively to the strategic development and long‑term growth of the laboratory

Promote technology transfer and strengthen collaboration with industry

Your profile

PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field

Demonstrated expertise in the science and technology of metals, and particularly in metal additive manufacturing (LPBF, DED, BJ etc.)

Excellent publication record relative to career stage

Strong potential to acquire competitive research funding and develop an independent research profile

Ability to work across disciplines and bridge fundamental research, technology development, and industrial applications

Experience in research project management and supervision of junior researchers

Excellent communication, networking, and leadership skills

Excellent command of English; knowledge of German and/or French is an advantage

Our offer Empa offers a highly attractive research environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure and substantial freedom to develop an independent research program. The position is offered as a tenure-track ap-pointment with an initial contract of 3 years and with the opportunity to progress to a permanent Group Leader position following a successful evaluation.
