Job summary
Carbon pricing is an important tool for countries to reduce their emissions and support the transition to a low-carbon economy. Ever more countries look to carbon pricing instruments as a central part of their climate policy response as NDC commitments draw nearer, and as Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms begin to influence patterns of global trade.
Are you an experienced carbon pricing professional looking to support implementation of domestic and international instruments? Do you enjoy working in an international team with partners from around the world?
Join adelphi as a key member of our world-leading team in Berlin. You will be involved in our core work areas of policy research and analysis, stakeholder dialogue, capacity-building, and advisory projects. You will also have an active role in supporting and shaping the work of the secretariat of the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP), a unique international forum for governments and public authorities to share best practices and design elements of emissions trading systems (ETSs).

Your tasks
- Delivering projects on carbon pricing design and implementation, both for adelphi clients and through the ongoing work of the ICAP secretariat.
- Writing reports, contributing to other knowledge products, and dissemination and promotion of adelphi and ICAP work.
- Representing adelphi and ICAP externally, interacting with public/private sector clients, participating in conferences, or engaging with ICAP member governments.
- Conceptualizing, acquiring and leading new projects.
- Coaching and mentoring of other team members and contributing to broader team development and planning.
Your qualifications
- A Masters’ degree in economics, international relations, law or political science, with a specialization in climate policy, environmental economics, international law, or related fields.
- At least 5 years of relevant working experience on carbon pricing instruments (7+ years of relevant experience for appointment at senior manager/advisor level).
- Proven experience in managing projects and ideally small teams (complex projects and larger teams particularly relevant for appointment at senior manager/advisor level).
- Proven knowledge of one or more of the following areas is desirable, but not essential: CBAM; Article 6 and crediting policy; social impacts of carbon pricing; removals; and monitoring, reporting and verification.
- Expertise and sincere interest in carbon pricing as a key tool for climate mitigation, and high motivation to advance this topic in direct collaboration with international organisations, think tanks, academia, civil society, and the private sector.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. Spoken and written fluency in English. Being a native English or German speaker is a distinct advantage.
- Excellent analytical and writing skills and ability to explain complicated topics to diverse audiences in an engaging and understandable manner.
- An excellent team player, with a proven ability to work effectively across disciplines and in inter-cultural settings, delivering on different priorities and deadlines under time pressure.
