In the mobile.de data and analytics teams, data is at the heart of everything we do. As the Head of Data Engineering (d/f/m) , you will driving our data and tech strategy forward, leading a talented team of data engineers while working at the forefront of modern data practices. This is a high-impact role with the opportunity to influence and shape how data empowers decision-making and progress across our company.

You will report directly to the Director of Data Strategy & Operational Excellence. This is a hybrid role, and our office is based in Berlin Charlottenburg.

You will:

  • Lead our data engineering teams and shape our culture

    • Manage three teams of highly skilled data engineers, with their team leads reporting directly to you.

    • You raise the bar for our technology and data solutions

    • You will support every data engineer at mobile.de, including those not directly reporting to you, being a mentor and ensuring alignment across teams.

    • You foster a collaborative and open culture where team members feel safe to speak their minds, reflect, and grow together

  • Write our data mesh story

    • You will lead the organizational rollout of our data mesh approach, distributing data engineering skills effectively between central and local teams.

    • You serve as a key advocate and enabler for data mesh principles

  • Take ownership of our data architecture

    • You take on Data Architect responsibilities, providing deep expertise in designing federated, scalable, robust, and high-performing data solutions.

    • You ensure our architecture supports both batch and real-time data needs, leveraging modern tools and methodologies and is built to foster self-service

  • Be an inspiring data and analytics leader

    • As part of the Data and Analytics leadership team you work closely with peers in analytics, data science, and data strategy to drive our vision forward.

    • You build strong relationships with internal customers, ensuring that our success is measured by their success.

Who you are:

We are looking for a professional with more than 8 years experience as a data engineer (or comparable) in general and 5+ years experience in leadership roles.

  • Technical Excellence

    • Deep experience with modern data technologies, particularly in cloud environments (e.g., Google Cloud, BigQuery, or comparable solutions) and with streaming technologies (e.g. Kafka and real-time analytics).

    • Experience designing and implementing self-service Data Mesh platforms for internal customers.

      Good knowledge and hands-on expertise of applying data mesh principles to real-world use cases and guiding teams through federated and decentralized data ownership models.

  • Leadership

    • Multiple years of experience in technical leadership roles, with a proven track record in managing and growing teams.

    • A servant leadership mindset, with a focus on empowering others and developing future leaders.

    • Authenticity and a collaborative approach, with a focus on creating a positive team culture and impact.
