Field Service Manager

Job Description

The Field Service Manager leads complex conveyor system installation, decommissioning, and maintenance projects at customer sites across the United States. This role combines hands‑on technical work with project management, team leadership, and extensive travel, ensuring that all field activities meet safety, quality, schedule, and budget expectations. The Field Service Manager supervises field service technicians and contractors, supports millwrights and electricians, and serves as a key point of contact for customers throughout each project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Manage conveyor system installation, decommissioning, and maintenance projects at customer sites, ensuring work meets scope, schedule, and budget requirements.
  • Communicate project status, risks, and issues clearly and regularly to customers and internal teams, providing accurate updates and recommendations.
  • Provide hands‑on support to millwrights and electricians on site to ensure proper decommissioning, installation, and commissioning of conveyor systems.
  • Ensure strict compliance with project specifications, safety regulations, and quality standards at all times.
  • Supervise on‑site project teams, including field service technicians, contractors, and subcontractors, to ensure adherence to project plans and client expectations.
  • Resolve project‑related issues as they arise and develop contingency plans to keep projects on track.
  • Supervise and instruct field service technicians to ensure they complete the scope of work on time, within budget, and to customer satisfaction.
  • Provide training and operational support to customers on conveyor system operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Maintain accurate and timely project documentation, including reports, change orders, permits, and field records.
  • Coordinate permit applications and ensure all required approvals are in place before and during field work.
  • Oversee field service management activities such as scheduling, coordination of crews, and resource allocation.
  • Support troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and automation issues on conveyor and conveyance systems, including PLC‑related diagnostics where applicable.
  • Utilize project management tools, ERP, CRM, and other software to plan, track, and report on project activities.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering, manufacturing, and service teams to ensure seamless delivery of turn‑key conveyance solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support successful project execution and customer satisfaction.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 5+ years of management experience, preferably in the conveyor industry or a closely related field service or industrial environment.
  • Proven experience working with conveyor systems and conveyance systems, including installation, decommissioning, and maintenance.
  • Strong leadership skills with demonstrated ability to supervise, instruct, and motivate field service technicians, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Experience in field service, construction, and industrial environments involving mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Solid electrical knowledge, including familiarity with electrical systems used in conveyor and automation equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude with experience in mechanical and electro‑mechanical systems, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in project management, including scheduling, coordination, and field service management.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, proposals, specifications, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills with the ability to develop contingency plans when issues arise.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic field environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently to customer sites, up to approximately 90% of the time, and to live anywhere in the United States while doing so.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least 3 years of experience in precision metal‑working machinery or a similar industrial environment.
  • Fluency in reading and writing English, with the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to navigate and work within ERP and CRM software systems.
  • Proficient to excellent typing skills.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms regularly while performing job duties.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Comfort working around materials governed by Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that are not life threatening.
  • Comfort working around moving mechanical parts and industrial equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Post‑secondary certification or degree in machining is preferred.
  • Experience with automation systems and PLC troubleshooting is highly beneficial.
  • Experience with pneumatics and related industrial systems.
  • Experience with AutoDesk or similar design and layout tools.
  • Familiarity with CRM and ERP systems beyond basic navigation, especially in a field service or manufacturing context.
  • Experience with change order management and field documentation.
  • Exposure to repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in industrial settings.
  • Experience with specific conveyor products and sortation equipment (such as advanced sorter systems) is a plus.
  • Understanding of Spanish is considered an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with customers and internal teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and adherence to EH&S requirements.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00/hr.

Work Environment

This role is field‑based and involves working primarily at large distribution and e‑commerce facilities, including major fulfillment centers, where conveyor and conveyance systems operate around moving mechanical parts. You will follow all site‑specific Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) requirements, with a strong emphasis on safety as a core value. The position requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds while working in active industrial environments. You will regularly work around powered equipment, conveyors, and other automated systems, and you will handle materials covered by Safety Data Sheets that are not life threatening. The work schedule often includes substantial overtime, commonly in the range of 40–45 hours of overtime per week, leading to extended workweeks and significant time on the road. You will use tools and technologies such as Microsoft Office, ERP and CRM systems, AutoDesk tools, and various mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic equipment associated with conveyor systems.
