Job Description

The Site Lead oversees on-site mechanical and electrical installation, commissioning, and maintenance of conveyor systems while leading a team of field technicians.

This role directs day-to-day activities at customer sites, serves as the primary liaison with project leadership, and ensures projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the client’s satisfaction.

The position requires extensive travel and hands‑on work with complex automation, controls, and mechanical equipment.

• Travel Information
• Flights, hotels, and rental cars will be provided
• Employees will receive $60/day (7 days) per diem
• Employees will be traveling 90% of the time and going from client site to client site, 30-60 days at a time
• Employees will receive $25/hr during travel hours
• Hours/Schedule Information
• Employees will work 6-7 days a week, but 7 days will be expected more often than not
• Employees will work up to 12 hours a day for a minimum of 18 days per automation line
• Primarily Day Shift hours

Responsibilities

• Direct and manage the day-to-day activities of on-site mechanical and controls technicians to ensure high-quality workmanship and efficient project execution.
• Act as the primary liaison between the on-site team and the Field Project Manager, maintaining clear communication and alignment with project goals and timelines.
• Ensure all installations, maintenance activities, and decommissioning work meet project specifications, safety regulations, and internal quality standards.
• Lead mechanical and electrical maintenance activities, including work on 480V three-phase motors, PLC troubleshooting, and automation systems.
• Oversee the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of conveyor systems and related equipment, ensuring proper operation and reliability.
• Plan and schedule project tasks in alignment with milestone installation timelines, assigning responsibilities to ensure efficient completion of project milestones.
• Monitor and adjust project schedules as needed to meet deadlines, providing daily and weekly progress updates to the Field Project Manager.
• Manage and track hours worked by the on-site team to keep projects within defined scope and budget.
• Supervise and coordinate the training, instruction, and mentoring of technicians in best practices for conveyor system installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, emphasizing safe work practices, quality workmanship, and adherence to company and site procedures.
• Troubleshoot and resolve on-site technical issues promptly, including mechanical, electrical, PLC, and controls-related problems.
• Read, interpret, and work from technical drawings, schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams to guide installation and maintenance activities.
• Coordinate and oversee cabling, wiring, and electrical system installation for conveyor and automation systems.
• Maintain positive, professional relationships with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders, representing the company effectively on-site.
• Ensure compliance with site-specific EH&S (Environmental, Health & Safety) requirements and OSHA safety standards at all times.
• Use project management tools, Microsoft Office, ERP, and CRM systems to document work, track progress, and report project status.
• Conduct preventive maintenance activities on conveyor systems and related equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Operate forklifts, scissor lifts, and other material‑handling and access equipment safely as required for installation and maintenance tasks.
• Travel frequently, including extended periods of 30–60 days on the road, to support installation and service schedules at various customer sites.

Essential Requirements

• Previous experience traveling for work in the past
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 7+ years of experience in a supervisory role within the mechanical and electrical installation field, with a strong preference for conveyor industry experience.
• Proven leadership experience managing field service teams and driving successful project outcomes.
• Strong hands‑on proficiency in both mechanical and electrical maintenance, including 480V three-phase motors and industrial power systems.
• Demonstrated experience working with conveyor systems, conveyance systems, and conveyor installations.
• PLC knowledge and practical PLC troubleshooting experience, including work with Allen‑Bradley and Rockwell Automation platforms.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.
• Experience with field service work, construction environments, and electrical system installation and troubleshooting.
• Proficiency with automation systems, photoeyes, sensors, and related control components.
• Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and decision‑making skills for resolving complex technical issues on‑site.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to manage internal teams and external client relationships effectively.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office products and familiarity with project management software.
• Experience working with ERP and CRM systems and the ability to navigate and utilize these tools effectively.
• Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets insurance requirements.
• Fluency in reading and writing English, with the ability to interpret technical documents and communicate clearly with team members and clients.
• Ability to safely use hand and power tools, lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and operate fork and scissor lifts.
• Comfort working in environments with moving mechanical parts and moderate noise levels while following OSHA safety standards.
• Additional Skills & Qualifications
• Technical degree, trade school training, or relevant technical certifications are preferred.
• Experience with conveyor systems in e‑commerce, distribution, or industrial environments.
• Hands‑on experience with automation equipment such as S7000 Intralox sorters and related conveyance technology.
• Experience with pneumatics, mechanical‑electrical repair, and preventive maintenance programs.
• Experience with installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of electrical and mechanical systems.
• Familiarity with Rockwell Automation platforms, Allen‑Bradley PLCs, and associated control components such as photoeyes.
• Comfort working from schematics and electronic diagrams for troubleshooting and installation.
• Experience with cabling, wiring, and electronic systems in industrial environments.
• Familiarity with Autodesk products and other design or layout tools used for project planning is a plus.
• Understanding of CRM tools and their use in managing field service activities and customer interactions.
• Proficient typing skills and strong general computer literacy.
• Understanding of Spanish is a plus and can support communication in diverse work environments.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chicago, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job‑related factors.
