Methodology Lead – Carbon Crediting, Additionality & MRV (MENA)
Location: Germany/DACH or UK (with regular travel to Egypt)
Engagement Type: Freelance / Fixed-Term Contract | Permanent Employment considered
Affluent Technology is an international engineering consultancy with offices in the UK, Germany and India.
We support complex engineering, infrastructure and sustainability programmes by combining project leadership, technical methodology development and specialist consulting expertise.
We are currently strengthening our carbon-market capabilities to support a major carbon-neutral urban development project in Egypt.
We are seeking an experienced Methodology Lead – Carbon Crediting, Additionality & MRV (MENA) to provide technical leadership for a large-scale, multidisciplinary carbon-credit feasibility and assessment programme.
The project involves an approximately 64 km² (8 × 8 km) master-planned development in Egypt, designed to integrate climate-neutral infrastructure, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, industrial production, electric mobility and urban services.
Several project activities may have the potential to generate carbon credits. However, their eligibility under recognised carbon-crediting methodologies has not yet been established.
Your primary responsibility will be to evaluate the technical creditability of proposed activities, identify suitable methodologies, assess additionality and define the requirements for robust monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV).
You will act as the programme's technical authority on carbon-credit eligibility, working alongside the Workstream Lead, who is responsible for programme scope, commercial planning and delivery coordination.
No carbon-credit volume or revenue estimate will be presented to the client without your technical review and approval.
Key Responsibilities
Phase 1 – Carbon-Credit Screening and Methodology Assessment (8–12 Weeks)
Carbon-Credit Eligibility and Methodology Selection
- Screen proposed project activities for potential carbon-credit eligibility.
- Identify applicable methodologies under recognised carbon-crediting programmes, including Verra VCS, Gold Standard and the Article 6.4 mechanism.
- Evaluate relevant Egyptian regulatory requirements and potential national crediting frameworks using regulatory input supplied by the client.
- Assess methodology applicability across renewable energy, agriculture, land use, electric mobility, waste management and industrial activities.
- Identify technical and regulatory barriers that could prevent activities from generating eligible credits.
- Develop a methodology selection and eligibility roadmap.
Baseline and Additionality Assessment
- Assess baseline scenarios and relevant greenhouse-gas emission sources.
- Evaluate investment additionality, barrier analysis, regulatory surplus and common-practice requirements.
- Review project start dates, prior consideration requirements and methodology eligibility conditions.
- Assess leakage, permanence and uncertainty where relevant.
- Determine whether proposed activities satisfy the requirements for credible emission-reduction or removal claims.
- Document and justify recommendations where an activity should not proceed to crediting.
Carbon Integrity and Double-Counting Risk
- Identify potential double-counting and double-claiming risks.
- Assess ownership and allocation of environmental attributes.
- Distinguish between emission reductions contributing to site-level carbon neutrality and reductions potentially eligible for tradable carbon credits.
- Evaluate relevant Article 6 authorisation and corresponding-adjustment considerations.
- Review alignment with the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles.
- Identify environmental-integrity, certification and reputational risks.
GHG Accounting and MRV Framework Development
- Define preliminary greenhouse-gas accounting boundaries and methodological assumptions.
- Identify activity-specific monitoring, reporting and verification requirements.
- Develop initial MRV concepts for potentially eligible activities.
- Establish data requirements, emissions-factor assumptions and quality-control expectations.
- Apply relevant ISO 14064-2/-3 and GHG Protocol principles.
- Prepare technical specifications for Phase 2 sector specialists.
Technical Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the senior technical decision-maker on carbon-credit eligibility.
- Work closely with the Workstream Lead to establish methodology-related go/no-go criteria.
- Review specialist assumptions and proposed assessment approaches.
- Engage with relevant registries and validation/verification bodies while maintaining their independence.
- Provide technically defensible recommendations to programme management and client stakeholders.
- Support the development of the certification strategy and assessment roadmap.
Phase 2 – Detailed Carbon-Credit Assessment
Subject to client approval, the Methodology Lead is expected to continue into the detailed assessment phase.
Responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing and approving baseline calculations and emissions-reduction estimates.
- Providing technical oversight of specialist assessments.
- Establishing conservative carbon-credit volume ranges.
- Reviewing MRV plans and project documentation.
- Leading the technical development of the certification roadmap.
- Supporting engagement with registries and independent validation/verification bodies.
- Ensuring technical consistency and methodological compliance across all relevant project activities.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- 8+ years of direct professional experience in carbon-credit methodology, carbon-market project development or technical carbon-credit advisory.
- Demonstrated authorship or lead authorship of project documentation for at least three carbon-credit projects that have successfully reached registration.
- Strong, current knowledge of Verra VCS and Gold Standard rules and requirements.
- Practical knowledge of relevant CDM methodologies and tools, Article 6.2/6.4 and the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles.
- Hands-on experience conducting baseline assessments, additionality evaluations and monitoring-plan development.
- Technical carbon-credit experience across at least two sectors, including agriculture/land use or energy.
- Strong knowledge of greenhouse-gas accounting principles, ISO 14064-2/-3 and relevant GHG Protocol guidance.
- Experience evaluating carbon-credit feasibility and identifying activities that do not meet eligibility requirements.
- Ability to assess complex technical information, challenge assumptions and make independent technical recommendations.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary project teams and external specialists.
- Excellent English or German communication skills; proficiency in both is advantageous.
- Willingness to undertake regular business travel to Egypt.
- Previous carbon-credit project experience in Egypt, North Africa or the wider MENA region.
- Experience working with validation/verification bodies.
- ISO 14064 auditor or verifier training.
- Carbon-credit methodology development or revision experience.
- Life-cycle assessment expertise under ISO 14040/44, particularly involving vehicles, batteries or industrial production.
- Experience assessing integrated urban developments involving energy, buildings, mobility and agriculture.
- Arabic language skills and familiarity with regional business practices.
Direct experience with registered carbon-credit projects is essential. Professional certifications are advantageous but cannot replace demonstrated methodology expertise.
What We Offer
- A senior technical leadership opportunity on a major international carbon-credit feasibility programme.
- Responsibility for determining carbon-credit eligibility and methodology selection.
- Collaboration with experienced engineering, sustainability and carbon-market specialists.
- Exposure to a large-scale, multidisciplinary carbon-neutral development project.
- Flexible engagement arrangements, with freelance consultancy preferred.
- Potential continuation into detailed assessment and certification planning.
- International project exposure and direct client engagement.
- Compliance and intercultural preparation ahead of regional travel.
This position requires proven, hands-on experience in carbon-credit methodology and project registration.
General ESG consulting, sustainability reporting or corporate carbon-footprint experience alone will not meet the requirements of this role.
Applications that do not provide verifiable carbon-credit project references and evidence of direct methodology involvement will not be considered for shortlisting.
Further project and client details will be shared with shortlisted candidates under NDA.
