We are looking for an experienced AI Engineer with deep commercial expertise in OCR, Intelligent Document Processing and Document Intelligence to join an established international SaaS technology business.
This is not a general software engineering role with some AI exposure.
We are looking for someone whose career has genuinely been built around Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with particular strength in OCR, document understanding, data extraction and intelligent automation.
You should have a minimum of 3 years' dedicated commercial AI/ML engineering experience, ideally 5+ years, and be able to demonstrate that AI has been a core part of your professional career rather than a recent pivot.
The focus of the role
The primary focus will be designing, developing and improving production-grade OCR and intelligent document-processing solutions within enterprise SaaS products.
You will work on technologies and challenges including:
- OCR and Intelligent Document Processing
- Custom OCR models and document extraction pipelines
- Document classification and data extraction
- Structured and unstructured document processing
- Image preprocessing and OCR optimisation
- Extraction accuracy and confidence scoring
- Document validation and exception handling
- Machine Learning models for classification and anomaly detection
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Vector databases and semantic search
- Azure AI Services and Azure Machine Learning
- Production AI pipelines and APIs
You will be responsible for taking complex document-processing problems and turning them into reliable, scalable AI solutions used within commercial SaaS products.
What we need
You should have:
- Minimum 3 years' dedicated commercial AI/ML engineering experience — ideally 5+ years
- Strong hands-on experience building OCR and document-processing systems
- Commercial experience with Azure Document Intelligence, Azure AI Services or equivalent OCR platforms
- Experience developing or improving custom OCR models
- Strong understanding of document classification, extraction and validation
- Experience improving OCR accuracy across complex or inconsistent document formats
- Experience with image preprocessing and document-quality optimisation
- Strong understanding of machine learning model training, tuning, evaluation and deployment
- Experience with technologies such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Transformers, LangChain or equivalent
- Experience integrating AI solutions with APIs, databases and enterprise SaaS platforms
- Knowledge of LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG architectures and vector databases
- Experience taking AI solutions beyond proof-of-concept into production environments
- Strong commercial and business understanding — you should be able to understand the problem being solved, not simply the technology being used
Academic background
We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong academic foundation in AI and Machine Learning.
Ideally you will hold a:
- Degree or Master's in Artificial Intelligence
- Computer Science
- Data Science
- Computational Mathematics
- Or a closely related technical discipline
Equivalent high-level industry expertise will also be considered where you can demonstrate substantial commercial AI experience.
Who we are not looking for?
We are not looking for a general Software Engineer who has recently moved into AI.
If your background is primarily Java, .NET, backend or general software engineering and your AI experience consists mainly of recent training courses, internal GenAI projects or experimenting with LLM APIs, this is unlikely to be the right role.
We need someone who has been working professionally and continuously in AI for several years, ideally with substantial exposure to OCR, document intelligence and intelligent automation.
You should understand not only how to use AI services, but how to:
design them, train them, evaluate them, optimise them, deploy them and continuously improve them in production.
This is an opportunity to play a significant role in developing the AI capability of an international SaaS organisation.
The work is not experimental AI for AI's sake.
You will be solving real commercial problems involving complex documents, data extraction and intelligent automation, with your work forming part of live enterprise software products.
You will also have the opportunity to explore how OCR, Machine Learning and LLM technologies can work together to create the next generation of intelligent document-processing systems.
