About The Company
The Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG) is a leading university computing center serving the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and acting as a key IT and computing competence hub for the Max Planck Society. With over 40 years of experience, GWDG specializes in providing high-performance computing (HPC) systems to support cutting-edge research across various scientific disciplines. In 2020, GWDG was recognized as one of the eight national high-performance computing centers within the German NHR network, underscoring its vital role in advancing scientific computing infrastructure. The organization also operates the national AI service center KISSKI and collaborates in European initiatives such as the EU AI Factory HammerHAI. Additionally, GWDG provides HPC resources to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and supports a broad spectrum of research projects in fields including digital humanities, life sciences, earth system science, and engineering. Its commitment to innovation extends into quantum computing, notably through the QUICS project, which offers SMEs access to quantum resources to foster industry-specific applications.
About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Quantum Software Engineer (m/f/d) to join our interdisciplinary HPC team within the "Computing" working group at GWDG. This full-time position (39 hours per week) is funded through the GWDG QC project, with a duration until October 2029. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing and expanding GWDG's quantum computing ecosystem, focusing on anomaly detection solutions tailored for industrial applications. The role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining a containerized FullStaQD platform as a reference model for broader project landscapes. This entails building modular, scalable infrastructure, establishing CI/CD pipelines, and ensuring robust security and data protection standards in compliance with DSGVO regulations. The candidate will work closely with research and industry partners to create innovative tools that leverage quantum computing for practical, real-world challenges, emphasizing security, reliability, and performance.
Qualifications
- A PhD and/or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Physics, or a related field, with demonstrable experience in industry or research settings.
- Proven coding skills in complex software development, including understanding of scope, functions, variables, classes, and array methods, verified through non-AI-assisted code review.
- Experience in designing and managing software architecture for containerized systems, with a focus on quality assurance and modular design.
- Hands-on experience integrating heterogeneous APIs and working with HPC scheduler systems such as SLURM.
- Knowledge of quantum computing job characteristics, resource requirements, and familiarity with compiler or transpiler pipelines.
- Understanding of encryption techniques and adherence to data protection standards, particularly DSGVO/GDPR compliance.
- Excellent teamwork, communication skills, and fluency in English, both spoken and written.
Candidates should demonstrate the ability to verify code security manually, without AI assistance, especially given the sensitivity of data handled by GWDG.
Responsibilities
- Implement a containerized FullStaQD platform as a foundational reference implementation, ensuring it is modular, scalable, and maintainable.
- Design and develop robust infrastructure to support quantum anomaly detection workflows, including establishing CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks.
- Handle heterogeneous APIs and ensure seamless integration with existing HPC scheduler systems like SLURM.
- Maintain strict adherence to data security and privacy standards, implementing DSGVO-compliant encryption and security protocols.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize the platform for industry applications, ensuring usability and performance.
- Contribute to ongoing research and development efforts, staying updated with advances in quantum computing, HPC, and AI integration.
Benefits
- Flexible working hours with opportunities for partial remote work, promoting work-life balance.
- Engagement in a modern, diverse, and stimulating work environment at the intersection of academia and industry.
- Participation in cutting-edge research and development projects with access to state-of-the-art HPC and quantum computing resources.
- Opportunities for professional growth through training, conferences, and skill development programs.
- Competitive social benefits aligned with the public sector, including health insurance, pension schemes, and leave entitlements.
Equal Opportunity
The GWDG is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or disability. We particularly encourage applications from severely disabled persons and strive to employ more individuals with disabilities. Our organization believes that diversity enhances innovation and excellence, and we are dedicated to providing equal opportunities for all candidates throughout the recruitment process.
