AI Futures are partnered exclusively with a Series A autonomous systems company in Northern Germany on a Search for a Head of Perception & Localisation.
Our client is building the autonomous systems behind large scale heavy duty , machinery.
Backed by Tier 1 VC's, the team has grown from 5 to 40 engineers in the past 12 months.
Perception is the deciding factor in whether their platform works, and it has never had a leader.
This is a first-in role: you inherit 10 engineers, a working prototype and an open brief.
The Role
- Own perception and localisation as a function - the roadmap, the architecture, the hiring plan and the budget.
- Build the team out from 10 to 35 over the next 8 - 10 months, and set the technical bar every subsequent hire is measured against.
- Take the localisation stack from prototype to production: SLAM, state and pose estimation, and multi-sensor fusion across camera, IMU, GNSS, lidar, radar and wheel odometry.
- Sit on the technical leadership team, reporting to CTO, and own perception in front of the founders, customers and investors.
- Stay technical. This is a role for someone who still reviews the hard code, not someone stepping away from it.
Requirements
- Has led a perception, localisation or computer vision team and shipped what it built - research groups that never reached production are not the profile.
- Deep personal expertise in SLAM, state estimation and sensor fusion, with the credibility to be the final technical word in the room.
- Has hired and grown engineers at this level in a competitive market, and can attract people on reputation.
- Comfortable with a first-in mandate: no existing process, no inherited playbook, direct access to the founders.
- Ph D or equivalent research depth in computer vision, robotics or a related field.
