To support the 'Mapping & DEM Development' department, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for an Intern in the field of geoinformatics (d/f/m). The 'Mapping & DEM Development' department deals with the development of new products and processes based on radar remote sensing data with a focus on digital elevation models (DEM). For the process development and validation of new products, freely available, highly accurate digital terrain models (DEM) derived from airborne laser scanning (=Lidar) data are used as a reference.

Your location at the Airbus site in the centre of Potsdam, you will be part of an experienced team of application and system developers. You can be in the centre of Berlin within 30 minutes or on the waterways and cycle paths of Brandenburg. The numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Potsdam are all within walking distance.

Your tasks and responsibilities

• Internet search and download of high-resolution lidar-based DTMs (open data)
• Processing (transformations regarding the horizontal and vertical coordinate reference systems) and mosaicking of elevation data using Python scripts
• Development and further development of Python programmes
• Interaction in an international team
• Active support of the DHM development team

Desired skills and qualifications

• Enrolled full-time student (d/f/m) specializing in geoinformatics, geoinformation, geodesy, computer science or a comparable field of study whose content is related to the areas of responsibility
• Fluent in written and spoken English
• Analytical and very independent way of working
• Social skills, ability to work in a team and cultural openness
• Motivation and initiative to contribute your own ideas for further development

Experience

• Experience in the automation of data downloads from the Internet ('mass downloads')
• Experience with freely available geodata and the corresponding online portals
• Experience in working with DEMs, geodetic reference systems and map projections

Software and programming skills

• Sound knowledge of the programming languages Python, HTML
• Knowledge of batch scripting (e.g. wget, curl)
• Confident handling of automated, http-based downloads of HTML pages (e.g. with the Python libraries requests, urllib)
• Knowledge of the use of Internet download managers (e.g. DownThemAll, aria2)
• Knowledge of the use of geodata download services, such as 'Web Feature Service' (WFS)
• Knowledge in the use of the Python libraries numpy and gdal
• Confident handling of desktop geoinformation systems, e.g. ArcMap, QGIS
