Hi! We are AMBOSS and we are looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer to join our team, and shape the future of medical education with us!
This role sits at the intersection of engineering excellence and user experience and requires strong React knowledge, a deep understanding of accessibility standards (AMBOSS is committed to being fully WCAG 2.1 AA compliant), and strong UI and development experience expertise.

You will:

Work as a Senior Engineer in an agile team with other developers and product designers on the Design System for our main product – the online educational and knowledge reference platform for medical professionals

Help others reach their full potential, support your peers through mentorship and coaching, and foster a constant exchange of ideas

Enable and help product teams to contribute to the Design System through close collaboration, pair programming, knowledge sharing sessions.

Collaborate with Product, Design & stakeholders

Foster collaboration with product teams around UI/UX and engineering topics

Present the results of the team at regular Web Guild meetings, explain the role of new APIs and UI patterns, support implementations in the main product

You bring:

Experience building and maintaining a design system, including the packaging and distribution.

Deep understanding of accessibility. You are passionate about user experience and consider WCAG guidelines as the baseline, not the ceiling. You advocate for inclusive design in every architectural decision.

Expert level CSS. You understand the CSS, CSS-in-JSm CSS modules and modern CSS features. You can build flexible theming systems and have opinions on maintaining consistent spacing, typography, and color systems at scale.

Systems thinking and API design. You design component APIs that are intuitive, flexible, and hard to misuse. You balance developer ergonomics with system maintainability and think in abstractions and patterns.

Performance optimization expertise. You understand bundle sizes, tree-shaking, lazy loading, and how architectural decisions impact application performance across different devices and network conditions.

Testing and quality mindset. Experience with component testing strategies (unit, integration, visual regression) and building reliable, maintainable test suites.

Collaborative problem-solving. You thrive in ambiguity and can work independently to research solutions while knowing when to loop in teammates. You\’re comfortable challenging existing patterns while respecting the constraints of a large, evolving codebase.

Empathy for developers. You understand the daily frustrations of product engineers and design solutions that make their lives easier. You measure success not just by code quality but by developer satisfaction and productivity metrics.

Design proficiency. You understand design tokens, auto-layout, component variants, typography. You can bridge the gap between design files and code.

AI and automation mindset. You\’re excited about leveraging AI tools and LLMs to democratize UI creation. Experience with or interest in building Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, prompt engineering for code generation, or creating AI-powered design tools that enable both engineers and non-engineers to rapidly prototype UIs using the design system.

Collaborative deep work. You thrive in a balance of focused coding time and collaborative design sessions. You\’re equally comfortable whiteboarding with designers, pair programming with engineers, or diving deep into a complex problem solo.

Teaching and enabling others. You light up when explaining complex concepts in simple terms and feel genuine joy when you see someone successfully use a tool you\’ve built. You measure success by how many people you\’ve made more productive.

The details AND the big picture. You can obsess over perfect spacing in a button component one moment and architect a complete theming system the next. You find satisfaction in both micro and macro optimizations.

Empowering non-technical creators. You\’re excited by the democratization of UI creation and love building tools that let product managers sketch ideas or designers prototype directly without writing code.

Making the complex feel simple. You take pride in abstractions that hide complexity while remaining flexible. You enjoy the challenge of making powerful tools feel intuitive and approachable.

Systematic thinking with pragmatic execution. You love creating order from chaos and establishing patterns, but you also know when to ship an 80% solution that unblocks teams rather than pursuing perfection.
