Overview The Department of Architecture (www.arch.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for two professorships in civic architecture, both based at the Institute of Design and Architecture IEA (www.iea.arch.ethz.ch).
Inspired by the challenge of creating spaces for a variety of communities and collective practices in contemporary urban territories, these new professorships focus on the character and role of civic architecture. We invite candidates with diverse and distinct approaches spanning the wide spectrum of civic architecture, which may include an emphasis on more monumental or everyday buildings, and range from locally grounded to cross‑cultural practices.
Responsibilities
Teaching of design studios and lectures in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Architecture, including supervision of Master's theses.
Exploring theoretical foundations, methodological skills and design approaches of civic buildings and urban spaces.
Developing a cutting‑edge research agenda focused on architectural projects that engage with society and on resilient and inclusive urban spaces.
Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration within the Department of Architecture and across ETH, particularly with the Institute of Design and Architecture (IEA), the Institute of Landscape and Urban Studies (LUS), public agencies and members of civil society.
Leading a group and contributing to the development of the Department of Architecture beyond the boundaries of the discipline.
Qualifications The successful candidates must have a substantial built oeuvre and competence in design and realization of high‑quality architecture with civic relevance. Qualifications include a university degree, accreditation by architects, and usually experience in both research and teaching. Experience in responsible leadership of a group and contributing to the development of the Department of Architecture beyond the boundaries of the discipline are expected.
Application Requirements Applications should include a covering letter; a curriculum vitae; a list of publications; three statements on research, teaching, and leadership; a project portfolio; descriptions of the three most important achievements; and a certificate of the highest degree. The covering letter should be formally addressed to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Joël Mesot. The closing date for applications is 31 August 2026.
EEO Statement ETH Zurich is an equal opportunity and family‑friendly employer, values diversity, and is responsive to the needs of dual‑career couples.
