What You’ll Do

The Consulting Veterinarian in Clinical Toxicology (CVCT) systematically gains toxicology knowledge through APC’s staged training and mentoring process.

The CVCT manages cases involving animals exposed to potentially dangerous substances, sharing expertise with veterinarians, animal owners, law enforcement, and colleague support staff.

The CVCT also participates in projects, educations, and communications to enhance the ASPCA’s work.

Where and When You’ll Work

This is a regional remote position.

Candidates must be U.

S. based and reside within a 350‑mile radius of the ASPCA Office in Champaign, IL for the duration of employment, and be available for travel to Champaign, IL.

Relocation assistance may be offered to candidates willing to relocate.

• This is a late evening position that includes nights, evenings, and holidays.
• Once trained, the position may include a full overnight shift approx. 3–5 times per year or partial overnight shifts 6–10 times per year to cover vacations for overnight staff; options include 10:00p–6:00a, 4:00a–12:00p, or 8:00p–4:00a.
• Schedules are subject to change at the sole discretion of the ASPCA.

Compensation

Starting pay depends on education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, and market demands.

Base salary ranges are $101,000–110,000 in Zone 1 and $110,000–120,000 in Zone 2.

Additional pay may include shift differential, per diem, or spot bonuses.

The range may be modified based on performance.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

• Professionally manage medical and toxicology cases initiated by telephone, email, and other electronic means.
• Obtain complete case histories and provide detailed, accurate diagnostic and treatment recommendations based on caller level and APC protocols.
• Enter consultation details into the electronic record with sufficient precision.
• Collect payments as needed using provided software tools.
• Develop risk assessments based on exposure history and clinical findings.
• Offer differential diagnoses when the original agent may not explain findings.
• Provide up‑to‑date treatment recommendations, including critical care procedures, lab result interpretation, fluid therapy, and pain management.
• Consult with on‑site and off‑site experts for complicated cases.
• Advise support staff in case management per APC protocols.
• Maintain quality in the case record and medical proficiency.
• Implement feedback from quality assessments by the Quality Assurance Team, Toxicology Protocol Team, manager, and other leaders.
• Meet efficiency and daily case volume goals per training level.
• Meet quality and customer service goals, exemplifying core values and behavioral competencies.
• Perform other duties as necessary.
• Training, Professional Development, and Supporting Opportunities
• Actively participate in on‑site, off‑site, or virtual training, including weekly veterinarian rounds.
• Develop protocols for the medical library database.
• Publish approved case reports or other educational documents in peer‑reviewed and lay media.
• Contribute to APC blog posts on toxicology topics.
• Provide staff training lectures and participate in the mentorship program.
• Serve as a peer resource by offering shadowing opportunities to new team members.
• Provide continuing education through APC webinars and external conferences.

Qualifications

• Solid understanding of veterinary clinical medicine and strong interest in toxicology.
• Veterinarian license credential required in the state of residence (DVM, VMD).
• Must obtain a State of Illinois veterinary license within one year of hire.
• Up to 20% travel may be required for onsite training and support.
• Remote work agreement required for this regional remote CVCT position.
• Internet connection download speed ≥30 Mbps, upload speed ≥4 Mbps, and latency ≤120 ms required.
• Ability to handle emergency or challenging situations compassionately and consistently.
• Sound reasoning and decision‑making skills.
• Effective communication with concerned, emotional, and worried callers; ability to de‑escalate and maintain professionalism during escalated interactions.
• Strong listening skills and quick rapport building with callers.

• Detail oriented, proficient in math and dosage calculation.

Education and Work Experience

• Graduate of accredited veterinary college (DVM, VMD) or foreign veterinary college with ECFVG or PAVE certification, or equivalent.
• Advanced degree or certification in toxicology or related area is beneficial.
• Must currently hold a veterinary license from any U. S. state and be eligible for an active Illinois state veterinary license within one year of hire.
• At least one year of clinical experience.
• Emergency facility work experience preferred.
• Veterinary internship experience preferred.
