About the role:

The Director of Finance and Infrastructure is a key position that is responsible for the financial health of the organisation, through leadership, strategy and management of contemporary financial and administrative services.

The role will manage and direct daily financial and accounting activities in a timely and accurate manner and assist in developing and updating the financial policies and procedures, including new initiatives. The position will coordinate financial forecasting and budgets and deliver high quality, timely routine and ad hoc financial reports for the Chief Executive Officer, Board and its Finance, Audit and Risk Sub-Committee. The successful applicant must be able to provide:

  • Robust, sustainable financial and asset management strategies and advice (inclusive of payroll, purchasing, accounts payable and receivable, fleet, and facilities maintenance, risk and insurance) that are aligned to business objectives.
  • Oversight, leadership and support to a small team, to successfully plan, implement, and review operational activities to achieve financial strategies.
  • Safeguarding Wuchopperen assets, grounds, and facilities (owned and leased) to ensure full operational functionality, including a safe work environment.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • Service planning and implementation.
  • Operational management.
  • Leadership and team development.
  • Relationship management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Financial, monitoring, reporting and resource management.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Ensure efficient financial and asset management systems are in place to meet the current and future business requirements of the organisation including:
  • Providing leadership and assisting in the development of short and long term strategic financial objectives including financial modelling and analysis, opportunities for expansion and projection of future company growth, and their financial implications.
  • Ensuring the effective management of all accounts, ledgers and financial reporting ensuring compliance with accepted accounting standards, grant funding and acquittals, regulatory and audit requirements.
  • Assisting in the development of organisation and program budgets in collaboration with program owners, executive leads, regularly assessing performance against approved organisational budget, and identify strategies to improve financial performance.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial reports and effectively communicate complex financial information, insights, and transparency to the CEO, Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Finance, Audit and Risk Sub-Committee (FARS) and Board.
  • Provide high level strategic leadership, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the annual external financial audit and any specific audits including coordinating the review of financial information in readiness for audits.
  • Maximise the organisation’s financial position through effective cash flow management and appropriate investment strategies identifying opportunities for growth and development.
  • Develop and maintain a suite of policies and procedures to optimise operations across the finance team, ensuring compliance and the integrity and accuracy of data.
  • Ensure adherence to all financial regulations, accounting standards, workplace health and safety, other legal requirements, and maintaining rigorous compliance measures across all operations.
  • Establish and apply stringent, internal financial controls safeguarding against fraud and financial mismanagement.
  • Regularly review existing practices, identifying risks and opportunities for improvement, implementing risk-based mitigation strategies in accordance with wider organisational goals, including insurance reviews and negotiations.
  • Ensure the effective management of key projects and provide advice, feedback and input into organisational proposals and initiatives.
  • Uphold and demonstrate Wuchopperen values along with ethical standards in financial and asset management practices and decision-making, fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct.
  • Mentor and develop team members, ensuring their growth and alignment with Wuchopperen values and organisational goals.
  • Implement key performance indicators (KPIs) and gather and record data to monitor performance and assist the ELT with evidence-based decision making.
  • Ensure cash flow is managed effectively, forecasting and monitoring liquidity needs, optimising working capital, and ensuring adequate funding to support ongoing operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Work within Wuchopperen’s Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.
  • Other appropriate duties as required, within skills, experience, and capacity.
  • For applicants to be successful in this role, they should demonstrate:

    • Proven strategic leadership and operational success in a complex finance and asset management function, ideally within the not-for-profit sector.
    • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
    • Excellent analytical and reasoning skills and the ability to manage projects, exercise sound judgement, make decisions on accurate and timely analyses and develop effective strategies to achieve objectives.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders, and work cooperatively with co-workers, supervisors and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
    • The ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment, prioritise and meet deadlines, and deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
    • The ability to partner with corporate services, ELT, the CEO, and program leads to achieve effective business objectives and organisational goals.
    • Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen.

    Qualifications and experience:

    • Tertiary qualifications in accounting, and Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) and membership of relevant professional body.
    • At least 10 years’ experience at a senior finance level, managing up to 10 staff, with at least a $30m enterprise, preferably in a for-purpose, not for profit organisation.

    Requirements:

    • Hold a current QLD Blue Card (for suitability to work with children and young people).
    • Proof of qualifications and registrations is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
    • Possess a current driver’s licence.
    • A commitment to adhere to Wuchopperen’s policies and procedures.
    • Successful applicant to provide a broader Criminal history check.
