The co‐operative has been feeding the South Island and serving its communities for nearly a century. The co‐operative consists of nearly 200 owner‐operated businesses trading as New World, PAK'nSAVE, Four Square, and On the Spot across the South Island. The partnership between the support centre, member owner‐operators, and suppliers is central to FSSI's identity and to how it serves customers and communities. Together with its sister co‐operative Foodstuffs North Island, FSSI collaborates across key national functions, shared businesses, and own‐brand products. FSSI and FSNI are distinct co‐operatives, each serving its own customers and communities. About the role The CEO of FSSI leads one of the South Island's most important and community‐connected organisations. The CEO works with the Board to set strategy and leads an executive team to execute, ensuring long‐term financial sustainability and the enablement of the owner‐operator model that has been the co‐operative's strength for nearly a century. This means supporting retail excellence, promoting supplier relationships, disciplined management of cost and investment, operating an efficient supply chain, and fostering deep member relationships. Based at the Christchurch support centre in New Zealand, the CEO leads the head office functions that power the store network, supply chain and distribution, technology and digital services, people and capability, merchandise, and the wider support services of the co‐operative. The role is to make these functions work seamlessly together, lifting performance, efficiency and capability so every store can focus on its local community. The CEO works in close partnership with a Board of owner‐operators and independent directors, and maintains trusted relationships with owners, supplier partners and South Island communities. As the co‐operative's leader, the CEO engages with government, regulators, media and community stakeholders, and is a strong and credible voice in the national conversation on the grocery sector. About you Ideally candidates will bring a mix of the following attributes: A proven track record of executive leadership in a large, complex, consumer‐facing organisation, ideally in retail or supplier environment, or an adjacent sector. Genuine alignment with the co‐operative model and the capability of leading through, and with, member owner‐operators. Strong stakeholder management skills, with the credibility to operate in a regulated organisation and engage with a wide array of stakeholders. Strong commercial, strategic and transformation credentials, with evidence of sustained performance through change. A people‐first leadership style, and a deep personal commitment to the South Island and its communities.
