Introduction
As an Electromechanical Engineer in CERN’s Engineering Department, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in maintenance of equipment used to handle and transport components for CERN’s particle accelerators and experiments, and of personnel lifts.
You will join the Engineering Department (EN), which provides CERN with the Engineering Competences, Infrastructure Systems and Technical Coordination required for the design, installation, operation, maintenance and dismantling phases of the CERN accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.
The position is opened in the Handling Engineering Group (EN-HE), which prepares, organizes and coordinates all transport and handling operations for the CERN accelerators and experiments as well as the transport of thousands of conventional and unconventional items, chemical and radioactive products per year.
You will be in charge of the Handling Equipment Maintenance (EN-HE-HEM) Section , which manages and maintains all the industrial transport, handling and lifting equipment to ensure the perfect performance all along its lifecycle.
Functions
As an Electromechanical Engineer, leader of EN-HE-HEM Section, you will:
- Supervise a team of 10 people (technical engineers and technicians) in charge of the maintenance of handling equipment at CERN;
- Provide engineering support for the maintenance and repair of equipment such as overhead travelling cranes, lifts, and any kind of industrial vehicles, standard or custom-made, dedicated to handling, lifting and transporting accelerators and experiments components;
- Provide technical advice on equipment maintenance;
- Provide costs and resources estimates for manpower activities and for equipment, and budget follow-up;
- Identify and justify investments in new equipment;
- Identify equipment to be consolidated and provide inputs for the Group consolidation program;
- Establish, in collaboration with the Group Leader, maintenance strategies and constantly monitor their application;
- Manage technical tendering for procurement of equipment and services, including drafting and revising technical specifications;
- Manage service contracts for maintenance of equipment;
- Use CMM systems for all the equipment of the fleet under EN-HE responsibility and suggest improvements.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electromechanical Engineering with specific emphasis in Industrial Equipment such as travelling cranes, lifts or special vehicles or a related field.
Experience:
As Electromechanical Engineer:
- Extensive experience in design or maintenance management of travelling cranes, lifts or special industrial vehicles;
- Demonstrated experience in software maintenance engineering and control systems;
- Demonstrated experience in drafting technical specifications.
As Team/Section Leader and Manager:
- Demonstrated experience in managing small to medium sized technical team (5-10 colleagues);
- Demonstrated experience in managing supply or service contracts;
- Installation and commissioning of lifting and handling equipment;
- Design of travelling cranes, lifts or special industrial vehicles;
- Maintenance management of handling & transport equipment;
- Knowledge of CMM systems;
- Knowledge of Control systems (preferably Siemens, Schneider).

Language Requirements:
Spoken and written English (level C1 min), ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. Ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts would be a bonus .

This position involves:
- Work in Radiation Areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving licence.
When required by the needs of the Organization:
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays;
- Stand-by duty;
Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
