We are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to join the Electronics Design and Low-Level Software to join our team. /p pAs part of our team, you will contribute to the White Rabbit (WR) project: a CERN‑born technology and now an industry‑standard that provides sub‑nanosecond synchronisation and deterministic data transfer to distributed devices interconnected with a WR network. /p pWe are looking for a skilled Embedded Software Developer to work on the next generation of the WR switch White Rabbit Switch v4. It is the core component of a WR network and now a new version is under development. Join us and take an active role in the design of this fully open‑source Ethernet switch! /p h3Your responsibilities /h3 ul liDevelop and maintain software and firmware for the WR Switch, including its Linux‑based operating system. /li liParticipate in bringing up and debugging new hardware versions. /li liMaintain git repos. /li liDevelop, maintain and perform WR Switch tests, including hardware in Continuous Integration (CI) pipelines, performance and compliance tests. /li liAssist in the development of production tests to be conducted post‑hardware manufacturing. /li liCollaborate with your colleagues in the hardware/software co‑design process, where HDL, firmware, Linux device drivers and host applications are developed and reviewed together. /li liCollaborate with external companies, universities and public institutes. /li liEnsure thorough and up‑to‑date documentation is in place. /li liPrepare firmware release. /li /ul pMore information here. /p h3Your profile /h3 ul liDevelopment of embedded Linux software and bare‑metal firmware. /li liWorking with an embedded Linux distribution running on SoC of AMD/Xilinx FPGAs. /li liPerformance and/or compliance testing using dedicated instrumentation. /li liDebugging of hardware. /li /ul h3Skills /h3 h3Required: /h3 ul liLow‑level programming in C, including bare‑metal. /li liEmbedded Linux and Linux Device drivers. /li liGit‑based development, code reviews, merge requests and CI pipelines. /li liPython. /li /ul h3Advantageous: /h3 ul liTesting frameworks, PyTest. /li liBasics of FPGA development (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog). /li liCapability of understanding PCB schematics. /li liNetworking and synchronisation protocols (e.g. NTP, PTP). /li /ul h3Language skills: /h3 ul liSpoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French. /li /ul h3Eligibility criteria: /h3 ul liYou are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. /li liYou have a professional background in Software Engineering (or a related field) and have either: ul liA Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post‑graduation professional experience; /li liA PhD with no more than 3 years of post‑graduation professional experience. /li /ul /li liYou have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before. /li /ul pJob closing date: b at 23:59 CEST. /b /p pContract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum. /p pWorking hours: 40 hours per week /p pJob flexibility: Fully Onsite /p pTarget start date: 01-September-2026 /p pJob reference: BE-CEM-EDL- -GRAP /p pField of work: Software Engineering and IT /p pBenchmark job: - Computing Engineer /p h3Global Benefits /h3 ul liA monthly stipend between Swiss Francs per month (tax free) depending on your degree. /li li30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure. /li liCoverage by CERN's comprehensive health insurance scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund. /li liFamily, child and infant monthly allowances depending on your individual circumstances. /li liA relocation package (installation grant and travel expenses) depending on your individual circumstances. /li liPossibility to extend your contract up to 36 months. /li liOn-the-job and formal training including language classes. /li /ul h3Overview of CERN -Discover a world where the impossible is made possible! /h3 pAt CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, we are pushing the frontiers of science and technology.
