Overview

As a Mechanical Engineer at CERN, you will help design, procure, assemble, test and install advanced mechanical structures for the HGCAL within CMS, tackling complex thermal and structural challenges. You’ll lead surface assembly, testing, and the underground installation of a 250-tonne detector, coordinating with a multinational team to ensure reliable integration of cabling, cooling, and services. Your work directly supports large-scale detector components and their testing, culminating in successful commissioning inside the CMS cavern. This role offers meaningful impact in a world-class, collaborative research environment.

Verantwortungsbereiche

  • Coordinate a team of technicians for assembling and testing the HGCAL steel structures (>200 tonnes per endcap)
  • Provide engineering support for large-scale detector components (cassettes) including cold testing and assembly with lead plates
  • Integrate hadronic cassettes into steel structures and support their testing
  • Integrate electromagnetic and hadronic sections with cabling and piping and oversee surface testing
  • Oversee lowering of HGCAL endcaps into the CMS cavern and their connection to CMS services

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Proven experience planning, coordinating handling, assembling and testing large mechanical structures
  • Experience performing thermal and structural calculations using finite element analysis
  • Experience developing mechanical assemblies using 3D CAD
