- Build and run the experiments behind a quantum computer, at a company with a fixed date for its first machine
- Deep tech, quantum computing hardware. Neutral atoms, optical tweezers and quantum gates
- Up to €130,000 depending on experience, plus stock options
Our client is building a quantum computer. They are venture backed with significant public funding behind them, and they are working towards a prototype fault-tolerant machine on a fixed timeline.
They are growing their experimental team and want physicists who have worked with their own hands on cold atoms or trapped ions. You would design and run experiments in laser cooling, optical tweezers and quantum gates, in a small team where you own your part of the apparatus rather than inheriting someone else's. Theorists, experimentalists and engineers all work on one site, next to the machine.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and run experiments on qubit control and manipulation in a neutral-atom system
- Build, align and optimise laser systems and free-space optical setups
- Operate and maintain ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems
- Implement quantum gates and improve gate fidelity
- Develop and improve the software that controls the experiment
- Publish research results and present at international conferences
- Work closely with theorists and engineers across the team
About You
- A PhD in experimental physics, such as atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics, quantum optics or precision measurement, or equivalent practical experience
- Hands-on experience with continuous wave (CW) lasers and free-space optics, covering design, alignment and stabilisation
- Hands-on experimental work in quantum computing, quantum simulation or quantum precision measurement, using cold atoms or trapped ions
- Business-level English. The team works in English
- Willing to relocate and work on site in Kyoto, since this role is hands-on with the apparatus
- A big plus if you have built an experimental system from the ground up, from the vacuum chamber to a fully working setup with optics, electronics and control
- Also a plus. Optical tweezers in cold-atom systems, automated calibration and monitoring, UHV systems, AOMs, EOMs and low-noise electronics, or time spent in a startup
- Japanese is not required
- Postdocs are very welcome to apply
- Salary up to €130,000 depending on experience
- Stock options
- Relocation support
- Wide scope at an early stage. You shape how your part of the experiment is built
- A mix of scientists from around the world, working in English
- Kyoto is an affordable and welcoming city for international hires
