Job description

We are looking for a new Professional to join our Climate Policy Team in Berlin, with a focus on analysing and modelling decarbonisation pathways for the industry sector. The role centers on evaluating the potential for ambitious emissions reductions across energy-intensive sectors such as steel and cement, aiming to reach (near) zero residual emissions and minimise reliance on negative emissions.
You will contribute to the development of Paris Agreement-compatible transition strategies by combining evidence from academic literature, institutional reports, and quantitative data analysis. The work involves both desk-based research and the application of techno-economic modelling techniques to assess feasible pathways and inform mitigation options. You will use energy system modelling tools, sectoral emissions data, and technology cost-performance assumptions to quantify decarbonisation pathways across industry sectors.

Your responsibilities

  • Conduct literature reviews on industrial decarbonisation pathways, including academic papers and institutional publications (e.g. IEA, industry associations).
  • Analyse sector-specific decarbonisation pathways and develop simplified techno-economic models using energy system and modelling tools to explore decarbonisation trajectories and mitigation options across industry sectors.
  • Evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of key mitigation technologies (e.g. hydrogen-based processes, CCS, electrification, circular economy).
  • Translate modelling results into policy-relevant insights and contribute to writing reports, briefing papers, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with international research partners and participate in internal coordination to ensure consistency and scientific robustness across projects.
  • Contribute to multiple ongoing projects simultaneously, delivering high-quality work within agreed timelines.
  • Ensure scientific rigor and transparency in research processes, including the use of version control and reproducible workflows.

Your profile

  • PhD or Master’s degree in engineering, economics, operations research, energy-related quantitative field, a related field, or equivalent experience in a relevant area.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent experience in lieu of advanced qualifications, focusing on techno-economic modelling of industrial decarbonisation pathways.
  • Strong understanding of emissions sources and mitigation strategies in carbon-intensive industry sectors (e.g. steel, cement, chemicals).
  • Demonstrated experience applying energy system modelling tools (proficiency in LEAP, OSeMOSYS, TIMES or similar tools is an advantage), spreadsheet-based techno-economic analysis, or scenario modelling.
  • Proven experience in quantitative analysis, including handling and interpreting energy and emissions data.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, and experience with collaborative coding environments using version control (e.g. git) are an advantage.
  • Ability to synthesise quantitative results into actionable insights for internal and external audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • A collaborative working style and motivation to contribute to climate action through evidence-based analysis.
  • If you believe your skills and experiences align with the core responsibilities, we encourage you to apply, even if you don\’t meet all the requirements.

Our offer

  • A job with purpose. With us you will work in a team of highly engaged people and with your skills you can make a positive contribution to our work in the field of climate change.
  • We are a diverse and inclusive team and welcome your application regardless of your gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, age, neurodiversity, disability status, citizenship, or any other aspect that makes you unique. You will work in a transdisciplinary environment.
  • We are working in a positive and inspiring working atmosphere with an international team.
  • Deutschlandticket fully paid by Climate Analytics.
