The Digital R&D (DRD) organization at Covestro is responsible for innovative digital solutions for the development of chemical products and applications. Among others, experts in material simulations and computational chemistry, laboratory automation, R&D data science, high-performance computing and quantum computing work here. The department is expanding its team of scientists and software developers to harness the new possibilities of artificial intelligence for chemical and materials science research. In particular, we intend to use large language models to gain better insights from unstructured data sources (such as research reports or regulatory texts) and to increasingly support the chemical research process with artificial intelligence and creativity.
In addition to our diverse benefits, you can expect an attractive starting salary between €87,200/year and €105,900/year plus a variable component if you work full-time. The starting salary is based on your qualifications and professional experience.
In this role, you will take care of the following tasks:

• Support ongoing and future projects in the area of AI
• Analyze business/project requirements and identify relevant data and tools for use in LLMs, AI models and applications
• Develop, maintain and automate chemical LLMs pipelines
• Develop, maintain and automate models and methods for accessing confidential information sources from existing LLMs
• Maintain and operate existing solutions
• Collaborating with cloud architects to automate, maintain and monitor pipeline solutions

What you bring to the job:
Required:

• Master\’s degree in computer science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field or equivalent industry experience in machine learning engineering or model development.

• Strong programming skills in Python, with an emphasis on writing clean, efficient, and modular code for Data and ML pipelines.

• Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and HuggingFace Transformers, including model customization and fine-tuning.

• Solid understanding of MLOps principles, including model versioning, CI/CD for ML pipelines, model monitoring, and lifecycle management.

• Experience with modern data storage and management architectures, including OLAP databases, Lakehouse platforms, and Vector Databases.

• Hands-on experience in deploying and maintaining cloud-based ML infrastructure (preferably on AWS), including services such as Glue, Sagemaker with tools like CDK and Terraform.

Preferred:

• Practical experience in medium to large-scale LLM training (e.g., PyTorch Distributed, DeepSpeed, Horovod, Hugging Face Accelerate).

• Experience in designing, executing, and interpreting robust machine learning evaluation experiments, including metric tracking, hyperparameter optimization, and error analysis.

• Experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval (IR) is a plus.

• Understanding of basic polymer chemistry principles, with an interest in applying machine learning techniques to scientific data processing and discovery.

• Strong communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
