To strengthen our engineering capabilities, we are looking for a motivated Hardware Development Engineer - Industrial Automation (m/f/d). This role focuses on the development and integration of electronic hardware, control electronics, and cross-functional system solutions for complex special-purpose machinery and automated manufacturing systems.
While PLC software development is handled by a specialized team, this position plays a key role in hardware-oriented automation engineering, including the design of control components, development of electronic circuits and systems, machine safety, and commissioning activities. You will work closely with colleagues from PLC software, software development, and mechanical engineering throughout the entire product lifecycle, from concept development through industrialization.
Your Responsibilities
- Develop automation concepts, electronic architectures, and system designs for special-purpose machinery and automated production systems
- Design electronic assemblies and hardware solutions for machine control, sensor technology, inspection, and measurement systems
- Design, review, and optimize electronic circuits and printed circuit boards (PCBs) for industrial applications
- Specify, validate, and integrate electronic components, sensors, actuators, drive systems, robots, and laser systems
- Specify and integrate PLC-based control systems (ideally Beckhoff / TwinCAT) in collaboration with the PLC software team
- Conduct machine safety analyses and risk assessments in accordance with Machinery Regulations and CE conformity requirements
- Support EMC-compliant hardware design as well as testing, verification, and validation activities
- Commission and validate machines in-house and at customer sites both nationally and internationally as part of interdisciplinary teams
- Perform root cause analysis, troubleshooting, and cross-system optimization for new and existing machines
- Apply and integrate industrial communication systems (e.g., EtherCAT, Profinet, IO-Link)
- Develop quality inspection and measurement solutions using modern sensor technologies
- Transfer developed systems into production-ready machines and manufacturing processes
- Document development, commissioning, validation, and test results in accordance with quality and regulatory requirements
- Collaborate closely with Mechanical Design, Robotics, Software Development, and Project Management teams
- Provide technical support to production areas regarding troubleshooting and corrective actions
Your Profile
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
- Experience in electronic hardware development, ideally within automation technology, special-purpose machinery, manufacturing equipment, or plant engineering
- Experience in the development of electronic assemblies and PCB design
- Knowledge of analog and digital circuit design
- Experience in validation, testing, and failure analysis of electronic hardware
- Knowledge of machinery and automation architectures
- Experience with machine safety, risk assessments, and CE compliance
- Experience with electronic design and simulation tools such as Altium Designer, LTSpice, OrCAD, KiCad, or similar tools is an advantage
- Experience with electrical engineering design tools such as EPLAN is desirable
- Structured, analytical, and independent working style with a hands-on mentality
- Ability to quickly understand new technologies and adapt to new areas of responsibility
- Fluent German language skills, both written and spoken, are required; English language skills are an advantage.
