Master student (f/m/d) - XR helmet integration for simulator training in Braunschweig

Braunschweig Vollzeit Vor Ort
Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR)

Welcome to the Institute of Flight Systems. Our work focuses on the interaction between aircraft configuration, pilots and modern flight system technology. From flight dynamics to unmanned aerial vehicles, from simulation to real flight tests - we analyse, test and develop innovations that will shape the flying of the future.

We in the Helicopter Department focus on rotor system and flight system technology for helicopters and other rotorcraft configurations. The goal of these activities is to support the development of new technologies and evaluate them in terms of improving flying characteristics, handling qualities, safety, economic efficiency, environmental compatibility, and mission effectiveness. The department's work includes system analysis, modeling and simulation of rotorcraft configurations and system components, as well as wind tunnel tests and in-flight testing.

Your Tasks:

  • You review the state of the art in integrating MR displays into flight helmets, ergonomic requirements and simulator-based training concepts
  • You analyse requirements concerning weight, centre of gravity, field of view, tracking and interfaces for MR use in helicopters
  • You develop a concept and prototype the integration of an MR headset into a helicopter flight helmet, including mechanical adaptation and simulator connectivity.
  • You conduct component tests in the laboratory and, where applicable, in AVES and assess ergonomics, wearing comfort and usability.
  • You measure the modified helmet's weight and moments of inertia as a basis for a digital-twin approach to assessing head loads.)
  • You will document your findings in a Master’s thesis or undergraduate dissertation in German or English.

Your Profile:

  • You are enrolled as a Master's student or advanced Bachelor's student in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering or a comparable programme.
  • You are interested in mixed reality and its application in aviation.
  • You have basic knowledge of human-machine interaction or ergonomics.
  • You work independently and in a structured manner.
  • You have good German and English language skills.
