At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructure in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructure and ensure it is adaptable, safe and sustainable. Working closely with partners from research, industry and other stakeholders in maritime security, we combine technological innovation with practical expertise and offer you the chance to work on pioneering projects.
What to expect
As part of our institute, you will take on the technical leadership of an existing team of early-career researchers working on maritime civil security simulations. The role focuses on constructive simulations in which simulated agents operate simulated systems. Such simulations are used to:
• assess the effectiveness of security equipment, such as sensors and platforms
• analyse operational concepts for the deployment of these systems and train personnel
This field brings together several specialist areas. We are developing a simulation-based environment using a game engine to model maritime security systems and operational scenarios. In addition, we are researching approaches in which the behaviour of individual agents in the simulation is based on machine-learning models trained using reinforcement learning.
Your tasks
- Providing technical guidance on the development of constructive simulation software for applications in the field of maritime security
- Conducting research into the use and further development of constructive simulations for maritime safety applications
- Managing research and development projects
- Supporting and fostering researchers within the team
- Contributing to project planning and the acquisition of third-party funding
You will have the opportunity to pursue your own research ideas in these subject areas whilst contributing to the further development and leadership of the existing team. The DLR plans and carries out its work within the framework of internally and externally funded projects. Therefore, project planning and assisting with the acquisition of third-party funding will also form part of your responsibilities.
Your profile
- A completed university degree (master’s / university diploma) in Computer Science or other relevant fields of study
- Relevant research experience (at least 2–3 years) in the field of simulation or agent-based modelling, for example gained through a PhD or other verifiable research activities
- In-depth practical knowledge of programming languages such as C++ and Python
- Extensive experience in software development
- Expertise in project planning
- Extensive experience of working with interdisciplinary teams
- Experience with third-party funded projects, e.g. EU funding programmes, national research funding
Remuneration is based on qualifications and the scope of duties and may extend up to pay band 14 of the TVöD.
