The industry and electricity sectors generate around 63 % of global greenhouse gas emissions, which primarily come from burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil. Would you like to contribute to the decarbonization of the industry and power grid? Come join our journey towards a more sustainable world.
The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) with more than 200 employees conducts research in the field of efficient heat and electricity storage and future energy conversion technologies. DLR plays a leading role in Europe and the world in the development of innovative energy storage technologies to accelerate the energy transition in energy-intensive sectors.
At the Department of Thermal Process Technology, we develop efficient and innovative technologies – from the very basic idea up to its application – for a sustainable heat supply at all temperature levels, aiming to reach more flexibility and higher share of renewable energy integration in the industry and power sector.
Surrounded by a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment, where you can explore your ideas and research interests, in the group of Thermal Systems for Fluids, we are looking for a person with a passion for laboratory experiments.
In your doctoral studies you will:
  • carrying out electrochemical experiments on molten salt for storage systems
  • evaluation of the results with regard to the use of molten salt storage systems in commercial concentrating solar power (CSP) plants and in the future in the industrial and electricity sector in Germany
  • You will present your results in the research team, at international conferences and in scientific articles
  • You will also be responsible for supervising students writing their Bachelor’s and Master’s theses
The position is based at the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamic in Stuttgart. Flexible working hours and mobile workplace concepts are part of our everyday life.

You have successfully completed your scientific university studies in process engineering, energy technology, renewable energies, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or similar with a master degree. You are enthusiastic about the topic of sustainable heat supply for industrial processes and the energy transition. You already have knowledge of electrochemistry, thermochemistry, wet chemical analysis methods, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, thermal process engineering, heat and mass transfer or a related field. You have experience in the materials laboratory or with thermal engineering setups in the temperature range 200 – 600 °C. You have experience in modelling, simulation and evaluation routines in a programming language, e.g. MATLAB or similar. You are a team player, creative, and able to work independent and self-motivated. excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of German is advantageous.
