Rotary UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are suitable platforms for monitoring rapidly evolving processes such as forest fires. Once smoke is dense enough to be captured on camera, the visual and infrared sensors on a drone can help gather vital information about a fire at scales much smaller than satellites can.
This project aims to use the visual and infrared sensor information from a flying drone to track the intensity and position of active fire fronts. You will write an interface from the smoke model to reality – based on the model’s information, where should smoke appear in the camera sensors? This output will then be compared with segmentation maps, which identify areas with high smoke concentrations, and we’ll implement a corrective mechanism for the smoke model. Some experiments with UAVs are planned.

programming skills in Python/Matlab/ C/C++ (Python preferred) are desirable computer vision, image processing are plusses strong interest in applied research is desirable independent working and a good working knowledge of English or German is an advantage
