Ihr Profil:
The art of measurement — made in Germany. Striving to perfect it is the mission of the 2,100 employees of PTB, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. As Germany’s national metrology institute and a leading center of research, we operate in an international environment to develop world-class measurement standards. We at PTB work to ensure that people and organizations can trust the measurements they use.
At our Braunschweig site, we are looking to fill the following position in Department 6.4 (Neutron Radiation):
Scientist (m/w/d) with a PhD in Experimental Physics / Nuclear Physics
Remuneration Group 13 TVöD Bund ○ Three-year fixed term ○ Full-time
You will support Working Group 6.43 Neutron Spectrometry in the further development and application of the Bonner Sphere Spectrometer NEMUS as well as other neutron spectrometers. Your activities will include:
- Operation and further development of the Bonner Sphere Spectrometer NEMUS for conducting neutron measurements in environmental and laboratory settings
- Design, implementation, and optimization of additional measurement channels of the Bonner Sphere Spectrometer for detection of high-energy neutrons
- Design, optimization, and quality assurance of automated data analysis for determining unfolded neutron energy spectra from environmental measurements, including consideration of environment-related correction factors and integration of the analysis workflow into databases
- Numerical simulation of neutron radiation under environmental conditions and benchmarking of neutron transport calculations in environmental contexts
- Operation of commercial measurement systems, including Cosmic-Ray Neutron Sensing (CRNS) systems and soil moisture sensors
Your profile:
- Completed university degree (Master’s/Diploma) with a PhD in experimental physics, nuclear physics, or a comparable field
- Strong knowledge and experience in several of the following areas:
- Interaction of ionizing radiation with matter
- Nuclear measurement techniques, neutron spectrometry; experience with operating Bonner Sphere Spectrometers is an advantage
- Experience in radiation transport simulations in matter using Monte Carlo methods; experience with neutron transport codes such as MCNP, Geant4, or URANOS is an advantage
- Knowledge of metrology fundamentals, data analysis, and uncertainty estimation
- Programming skills for scientific applications, preferably in Python
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- English proficiency (C1 level ); German language skills are an advantage
- You are willing to travel for work both in Germany and abroad
- You are willing to work as an occupationally radiation-exposed person
We offer:
Actively shape the future of neutron spectrometry by advancing sophisticated measurement technology, optimizing complex data analysis, and developing simulation-based analyses for practical environmental applications.
